Whittler of worlds. 🪐

I write. I play around at making videogames. Sometimes I even actually whittle.

I kind of hate social media, he posted.
When in a writing session, I try to stop in the middle of a scene rather than at the end, otherwise I will put off writing the next scene. Because to sit down at my desk and be looking at a blank page is daunting no matter how much planning I might have done.

Q3:
Here at #HorrorWritersChat we really do like to peel back those insecurities and fears and expose them to the light. You can do this.
Which scene do you keep putting off? And why?

I learned about the subgenre #cottagegore recently and reckon it fits my book perfectly.

Welcome to #HorrorWritersChat

I hope you've grabbed a snack and a drink in a cosy spot.

Let's begin.

Q1: Introduce yourself and the horror subgenres you write.
Then, share your favourite horror story/movie set inside a home.

My first #DIY spoon turned out alright, if a bit wonky and a bit thick about the handle, but altogether not too bad. Now a cup of tea and a little #writing before bed.

Currently writing a non-horror story where the protagonist/narrator is a cat. It's about as far from a horror story as I have ever written. Anyway, I'm pretty sure he would have no love in his heart for Squirrel day.

#HorrorWritersChat
I LOVE these days being subverted. You're all in sweatpant heaven. What about your WIP characters? your main characters? And what would they say?

"Even those who live alone and shun all that lies beyond their locked doors have experienced that empty embrace that wraps the darkest of nights. Cold thin arms that encompass weary minds. Dreamless, and without comfort, they tighten."

Happy hug day everyone!
So we have four days today...or was it five? SUCH a busy day...

International Squirrel Appreciation Day
National Hugging Day
International Playdate Day
International Sweatpants Day
National Granola Bar Day

So which one will you choose to make horror? I know you can....

I'm Connie Whittles, I don't only write Horror, but the horror I do write tends to be cosmic/supernatural.

Despite my irreligousness, my favourite 'international' day is pancake day, for obvious reasons.

Q1.
For me this is the most important. Who are we, really?
Let's spill the beans. Or the squirrels. Or even the granola.
We're all listening.

Today I have drafted names and covers for the sequels to the novella I haven't even finished writing yet. Sometimes it's fun to have unrealistic expectations. No regrets.

Currently writing a cosy novella featuring a feline narrator, and whittling a wonky wooden spoon.

Oh now that could be a spoiler, but I'd say it's a combination of supernatural forces and human nature.

#HorrorWritersChat
Horror is known for having both natural and supernatural antagonists, like the landscape or a ghostly presence.

Q4 #HorrorWritersChat

In your current WIP or latest published horror work, who or what antagonises your protagonist?

I often use a narrator who was present for the events of the story, and they are telling us what happened reflectively. Using this perspective allows me to allude to the experience of the narrator before they have described the events that 'changed' them.

Q3 #HorrorWritersChat

How does your writing style seek to instill fear, disgust, or otherwise unsettle your readers?

[See an example from Cynthia Pelayo in the graphic]
January 14, 2026 at 10:38 PM
I've found the same thing crop up in a few stories I have written, and that is the false assumption that 'good' is an ethical standard maintained by the majority of people. In my fiction such as in the world right now, it often isn't.

#HorrorWritersChat
“Horror comes from a violation of what characters perceive to be reality.” - Writing in the Dark by Tim Waggoner

Example: a haunted house violates the assumption that we are alone in our homes.

Q2 #HorrorWritersChat
Which perceived realities do you utilise in your horror writing?
January 14, 2026 at 10:29 PM
I'm Conrad Whittler, the horror story I have written is a bit of a genre blend, I'd call it a family cosmic horror story.

It wasn't influenced by a particular book, rather by a specific Scottish folktale and a few local stories I remember from growing up.

Q1
Introduce yourself and the horror subgenres you write.

Then, share three works of horror that influenced your latest work OR current WIP.

There are two things I need more of; time and sleep. If I had more time I'd definitely need to spend it sleeping.

I'm writing a novella. Do people read novellas? Do people buy them? I like a short book sometimes.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Years to all the builders out there who are creating something with their own hands, whether they are using a pen, a keyboard, a hammer, or a carving knife. Looking forward to whittling many more worlds in 2026.

I plan in 2026 to finish #reading more #books than I start.

'Touch grass' doesn't mean go out and walk around the park with your shoes on. Go full hobbit or go home.
December 9, 2025 at 4:34 AM
I almost always #write stories that are narrated by a character within the story. Usually framed as them telling the story for a reason. Inspired by the kinds of books I enjoy reading. 💙📚

Does anyone else do this? Does anybody else also like #reading these kinds of books?
November 27, 2025 at 8:10 AM
Back on the editing train for a time. It's not as fun as the writing train, it's slower, and there are more stops. But hey, at the end is a properly finished book. 💙📚

My last book was a supernatural horror story about missing children and occult ritual. My next book is about a cat that attends a writing group on Wednesdays. If I were published, then my readers would be in for some whiplash.

Sometimes I write using the Word app on my mobile phone like some kind of #writing freak. Not just notes, actual manuscript sentences. It doesn't feel right but sometimes it needs to be done. 📚💙

I write at least one line every day like the good little world whittler that I am.

#Writing while tired, these are either the best sentences I've ever strung together or absolute mince that I'll cringe when I read tomorrow. No inbetween.

I aspire to be a reclusive writer.

When WW3 eventually happens, NZ isn't going to be safe because it's isolated. It's going to be safe because the POS AI that launched the nukes will have scraped it's map from a reddit post.
