Gimmicks you'll need, and gimmicks there'll be; especially when you get to Leprechaun 3.Yep, by only the third episode, the continuing adventures of Warwick Davis' Leprechaun had settled nicely in using ludicrous location changes to dictate the needs of the plot. However, it's only normal for Horror icons to travel to refresh their respective franchise - I mean Pinhead went to space, Jason went to space and New York (sorta) and even Chucky eventually made it to the Whitehouse.

It truly seems that the creative brains behind the Punisher's second season really has learned a few lessons and gotten the balance required to do Frank Castle justice. Realising that they've got to make their season last for thirteen episodes whether they like it or not, the tedious slow burn that marred large chunks of season 1 have been skillfully maneuvered to keep the same supporting players on the board while building a new plot that feels more organic to who the Punisher really is.

Long ago, in a mystical realm known as... the 80s, a genre of cinema knew an era of peace and prosperity born of cheesy effects and questionable budgets. Some, like The Neverending Story and Willow, stood proud and tall, projected on large, glistening screens for all to see, while others trawled throughout the dark realms of the kingdom known as video rental shops and contained less family friendly content as explicit gore and bare boobies.

Realism. That's pretty much the main difference that exists between the fanciful, colourful world of the MCU and its darker, grittier companion world on Netflix. While I'm obviously claiming that each of the Defenders and their respective worlds are legitimate flesh and blood world where physics rules with an iron fist (pun not intended), the difference between Spider-Man zipping round the New York of the MCU and Daredevil prowling Hell's Kitchen couldn't be any clearer - but sometimes I wish they could blend their rules a little.

When it came to glossy, enjoyable and utterly ludicrous nonsense that still, inexplicably made you want to punch the air with glee, the 2013 heist thriller Now You See Me was a surprisingly engrossing slice of bunkum that fetishised illusionists to a near embarrassing degree. Essentially a riff on Stephen Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven franchise that had the cast pulling doves from pockets while it yanked plot twists out of its ass, it nevertheless proved to be fluffy escapism that remained immune to only the most grumpy of viewers.

As we all well know, even taken beyond the realms of It, Stephen King's fictional town of Derry has had something of an extraordinarily complex past - Hell, it even pops up in in Edgar Wright's recent The Running Man remake. However, sometimes it feels that you need to be something of a historian to be able to string all those freakish occurrences together, especially when they're delivered as footnotes in the midst of a larger story.

One of the main problems when it comes to remaking huge, unsubtle sci-fi action movies from the 80s and 90s is that they tend to loose the bolshy personality and razor wit that made them so distinctive in the first place. Take both Robocop and Total Recall for example: two undisputed bangers from Paul Verhoven that saw both their respective edges blunted by their plastic, safe, do-overs that lacked that vital spark and charisma.

Last episode I commented on how the folks behind The Punisher are wisely shooting for a more 70s inspired feel to the show that's really come to the fore since the second season began, however, imagine my delight when the show takes yet another step in the right direction when the entire episode riffs super hard on John Carpenter's Assault On Precinct 13.

Look; we all love Spaced, right? You know, the Channel 4, pop culture savvy sitcom that that made Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright virtual household names to a certain generation. Additionally, we also adored their leap into movies with the pitch perfect comedies Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz that took that post modern approach and used it to make Wright one of the most endearing directors operating today.

A good hunter always knows when to evolve and adapt to changing terrain, but even so, you have to be impressed about how many new tricks the Predator franchise has managed to aquire in just a few years under the scope-like eye of Dan Trachtenberg. Starting with the stripped-back Prey in 2022 that took the series to it's roots and had a member of the Yautja square off with a determined Comanche girl in 1719, the director expanded the Predator universe exponentially with the animated anthology film, Predator: Killer Of Killers.

As we forge into the second episode of the second season, there truly is a sence that the showrunners and writers behind The Punisher are really trying to lean into the more unglamorous world the character operates in. While the first season had him tangling with rogue elements within the CIA to weirdly un-Punisher like effect, and fellow superhero series such as Daredevil and Jessica Jones had them squaring off against ninjas and failed superhero experiments, this season has Frank stumble into the decidedly unglamorous world of a criminal conspiracy.

Warner Bros have made Gremlins 3 official by giving it a 19th November, 2027, release date. Steven Spielberg is back as executive producer and Christopher Columbus, the original films writer, is onboard to write and direct. Yup, it sure takes a helluva lot to keep Frank Castle down; in fact, not even the languid pace of the majority of his first season was enough to stop the Punisher scoring another season over at Netflix. However, while season one managed to pull it back with style thanks to some stunningly ferocious setpieces and a fittingly brutal mindset, there's a sense that season 2 is a major opportunity to rectify some of those more annoying issues.

Doesn't it feel sometimes that concocting a screenplay feels like someone frantically trying to invent a brand new cocktail from scratch? The act of throwing numerous ingredients into a shaker and then mixing the shit out of them in the hope that they compliment each other feels less like an artist plying their trade and more like someone desperately trying to make something stick that'll hopefully sell.
