HE / HIM / HIS / HIMSELF

My name is Isaac. I am fond of organisms that can be colloquially referred to as a "bug" (such as many invertebrates). I have a neurotic disposition and I was born at exactly 2:27 AM on a Saturday morning.

An Oxytrigona cagafogo fire bee launches from her nest in subtropical Brazil.

When I took this photo in 2012, the resources available for species IDs were sparser than now, and I often left images unprocessed if I couldn’t figure it out.

Turns out I’ve got buried treasures!

Diminutive fairy wombat poop. Tiny cubes under 2mm on each side.

These are egg sacs made by a spider in the family Theridiosomatidae.

They made yesterday’s hike special. Finding something I’ve never seen before is such a thrill.

This South Pacific Orb-weaver #spider is in the genus Acroaspis, possibly A. olorina given it was seen in Western Australia.

BRAND NEW SENTENCE LEVEL RESEARCH

Dinidorid stinkbug females are armed with leg holsters containing cordyceps species that they use to inoculate their egg clusters & grow a fuzzy fungal blankie that excludes parasitic wasps.

There is a LOT going on down there! #虫🌎

In my pursuit of an unknown species of leaf-mining fly on false hellebore, I accidentally discovered a new species of stem-boring fly, which had a zillion other insects living in the stems along with it.
False Hellebore Fauna
For the past decade, I have been trying to rear an unknown species of Liriomyza (Agromyzidae) that mines leaves of false hellebore (Melanthiaceae: Veratrum viride). The mines are very scarce consid…

A garden find from Shaftesbury this week, I occasionally see these in the house (usually the kitchen) but this is the first outdoor one I've seen. This is a Wine Cellar Spider, Psilochorus simoni carrying her eggs. (I do have a small cellar but rarely any wine for very long)
