If you look hard, you can sort of see some letters under the yellow paint. Unfortunately, the graffiti artists will get to it, or the building will burn down, by the time it sees the light of day.

Hewburn Greenidge made MB history 3 times: in 1913 when he was the first Black student to enroll at the MB Medical College, in 1920 when he became the first Black graduate of any of the U of M's colleges, and became MB's first Black doctor!

Survival of the stubborn: The little-known histories of Winnipeg’s holdout homes
We all know Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest, often misquoted by stale memes and bad motivational posters and a certain hack reporter - those who last are those who adapt.

1/2 1/2 Early Valentine’s Day items from local papers.

You can find St. Valentine's Day mentions right back to the 1870s. Early events were things like dress up parties or skating nights, often including children and youth, not so much geared at gifts, singles and matchmaking...

Some good news on the shard front after the fiasco of Air Canada Park last year. The terra cotta panels on the part of Portage Place being demo'd were removed to be reused in the new project. More about the shards and the building they came from:

I love writing about tiny houses. At at 529 sq ft, 412 Salter St. is one of the smallest. Built in 1893, it was part John Newby's dairy farm.

Sadly, it is now abandoned, so here's a look back at its history before it is gone: winnipegdowntownplaces.blogspot.com/2026/01/412-...

The Adanac Apts at 737–743 Sargent Ave has again been reno'd and sports an ominous black and grey paint job to match its recent past. It wasn’t always that way.

West End Dumplings turns 18! I started blogging back in 2008 and now have 2,261 posts.

It’s incredible how much info is now available online. It used to be microfiche and copying photos from old books/reports for content. Now, 99% of my blog and column work is done from home.

Ever wonder about that gap on Main Street near Logan? It was the Stanley Block / Main Apartments that burned down in Aug. 1969. It's unclear why four columns and a couple of beams, presumably from the original building, were erected at the site.

Sad to see the former Old Bank Groceteria on Logan burned and boarded up. It was built in 1906 as one of the Cdn Bank of Commerce's "kit" banks duplicated in dozens of communities across the prairies.
