Young people with supportive family networks can turn to them for advise when they need it. However, without that support moving into a new home can be challenging.

We often hear about how care experienced young people have been let down or haven't had support when they needed it.

I'm a Senior Trusts and Foundations Officer at Settle, which means I help raise the money that we need to support young people. As we are a charity, we're always fundraising to keep our work going, so I spend most of my time writing about Settle, telling people about the need for our work and how we can make a difference. Before starting this role in April, I was a Senior Settle Coach for over 3 years! I absolutely loved it. I got to know so many amazing young people and it was such a privilege to see each person achieve things they never thought they could. This new role is great, because it gives me the opportunity to help more young people experience Settle's life changing support. Image text: What did you do before joining Settle? I worked at a charity that supported charity CEOs who had lived experience of the problem they were trying to solve. Our aim was to make sure that they were given personalised support to give them the best chance at making a difference, so I worked closely with each person to understand what they needed, like support with their finances or wellbeing - kind of like a Settle Coach! Image text: Why did you join Settle? I had always wanted to work in a frontline role. I love meeting lots of different people and making sure people feel seen and heard is incredibly important to me - especially if they've been disempowered. I wanted to work somewhere that helped people to believe in themselves and see that other people believe in them. I started to learn more about the care system in my previous job, where I worked with someone who was building trauma-informed children's homes in the UK. The more I learned about what young people's experience can be like in the care system, the more I wanted to play a part in helping those young people experience meaningful care and support.

I’m Head of Fundraising at Settle, so it’s my responsibility to keep the money coming in that enables us to carry out all of our important work. Our 3 year strategy lays out ambitious plans to grow our reach, so I’m working to sustainably increase our income. To do that, we’ll need all the support we can get from our community: garnering that support is a big job, but it’s one I love. As a member of Settle’s Senior Leadership Team, I really enjoy contributing to the charity’s problem-solving, goal-setting and decision-making. Before joining Settle, I worked as Director of Fundraising and Communications at a Dorset-based charity that works to support young carers. Prior to that, I completed a teaching qualification through TeachFirst and worked as a secondary school English Teacher and Curriculum Advisor. The threads that tie my career journey together include a love of language and storytelling, and a drive to see young people achieve their full potential. My job at Settle feeds both of these perfectly! Image text: Why did you join Settle? Settle’s mission and impact inspired me. I hadn’t realised before I came across Settle how little support care-leavers received, or how significant an impact this made on their outcomes as young adults. When I read about Settle’s cause, I felt angry on behalf of these young people, and when I read about the difference that Settle makes, I knew I wanted to be a part of that. Now that I’ve been at Settle for 2 years, I can say that I also adore the team, the culture and the shared passion that drives us all to do our very best for the young people we serve, every single day.
