On May 5, 1980, Watertown changed its municipal charter from being a town form of government to a city form of government and used the phrase "The City known and the Town of Watertown". On November 2, 2021, the voters approved the name change to the "City of Watertown".

On Thursday, April 17, 2025, State Representative Steve Owens visited the marker at 20 Watertown Street in Watertown, where Paul Revere once had a house in 1775, with a replica lantern from his famous ride that is being used for the commemoration of the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride.
