Dr. Shishen Lin has joined us as a Research Fellow on the ERC Synergy OCEAN project from September. His research is in learning in games, black-box optimisation and evolutionary algorithms. He is also interested in reinforcement learning and its combination with evolutionary computation methods.

Last Wednesday we were delighted to host our brand-new Alumni-focussed Actuarial Careers Event!
With a fantastic line-up of actuarial alumni speakers the event was a huge success and our students were treated to a super series of talks from speakers at different stages of their career.

Dr. Maria Perez Lara has joined the department as a Research Fellow and as a member of the MaThRad project. Her research consists of the physical validation of mathematical models for particle transport in particle therapy, using a Monte Carlo simulation toolkit developed for high-energy physics.

Dr Kevin Huang has joined us as a Research Fellow affiliated with the Prob_AI Hub from September. Kevin studies the theory of neural networks and stochastic optimisation, with tools from high-dimensional statistics and random matrix theory. He also works on AI for physics algorithms as applications.

Dr Gengyu Xue is currently working in the department as a Research Fellow affiliated with the DASS programme, having recently completed her PhD here. Her research interests include differential privacy, algorithmic fairness and change point analysis. She won the ICSDS Student Travel Award last year.

We are excited to have David Martinez del Rio joining us this year as a tutor. He earned a Physics degree at UNAM (2005), MSc in Maths (2012) and PhD (2019). He held two fellowships at Warwick’s Institute of Mathematics and tutored in Statistics in 2022-23. He is tutoring ST120 and ST229 this term.
Dan Miles is joining the department as a Tutor this year. He recently obtained a PhD in Statistics from the University of Bath, having developed upon LASSO methods for suitable estimation on a novel covariate-influenced multivariate data setup. He is tutoring the first-year module ST118 this term.

Congratulations to Rocco Caprio, who successfully passed his PhD viva last month! He is now working in the department as a ProbAI Postdoctoral Research Fellow. Rocco’s research interests span computational statistics, applied probability, optimisation, and the mathematics of machine learning.
