Ollie Kemp successfully passed his PhD viva last week! The PhD thesis is titled 'Reducing estimation bias in challenging modelling settings'. Ollie is supervised by Prof. Ioannis Kosmidis. On behalf of the entire department, we would like to congratulate Ollie on this fantastic achievement!!

🎉 Shreya Sinha Roy, a fourth-year PhD student in our department, has recently been announced as one of the 21 recipients of the IMS 2025 ICSDS Student Travel Award. Shreya has research interests in computational statistics, sampling methods, and reinforcement learning.

Dr. Shishen Lin has joined us as a Research Fellow on the ERC Synergy OCEAN project from September. His research is in learning in games, black-box optimisation and evolutionary algorithms. He is also interested in reinforcement learning and its combination with evolutionary computation methods.

Dr. Maria Perez Lara has joined the department as a Research Fellow and as a member of the MaThRad project. Her research consists of the physical validation of mathematical models for particle transport in particle therapy, using a Monte Carlo simulation toolkit developed for high-energy physics.

Dr Kevin Huang has joined us as a Research Fellow affiliated with the Prob_AI Hub from September. Kevin studies the theory of neural networks and stochastic optimisation, with tools from high-dimensional statistics and random matrix theory. He also works on AI for physics algorithms as applications.

Dr Gengyu Xue is currently working in the department as a Research Fellow affiliated with the DASS programme, having recently completed her PhD here. Her research interests include differential privacy, algorithmic fairness and change point analysis. She won the ICSDS Student Travel Award last year.

We are excited to have David Martinez del Rio joining us this year as a tutor. He earned a Physics degree at UNAM (2005), MSc in Maths (2012) and PhD (2019). He held two fellowships at Warwick’s Institute of Mathematics and tutored in Statistics in 2022-23. He is tutoring ST120 and ST229 this term.
