An old lawyer in love with new music, among other things. Snappy patter & wordplay a subspecialty. Not one of those George Wallaces you may have heard of. Occasional longer outbursts via georgewallace.substack.com. Mostly harmless. Neither mod nor rocker.

Such a surfeit of self-regard
Such a void of self-knowledge

It would be jolly fun if, instead of premiering "Melania" Thursday night, the projectionist at the Kennedy Center shows Philip Glass's "Satyagraha." Trump likes musical theater, right?

Learned just this morning that Bill Laswell shares the writing credit with Lydon on this indispensable evergreen banger.

And you may ask yourself, "Who is paying for this?"
brass solidarity band performing “stand by me” in the streets of whittier next to alex pretti’s memorial. the crowd started chanting “the people united will never be defeated” so they incorporated it into the song. i love minneapolis

I had a week-long civil trial in El Centro that trailed on the calendar and required multiple trips over nearly 3 weeks to get done. Thus I learned that if there is a place whose name you know, El Centro is never fewer than 3½ hours from there. It is an ever-receding mirage until you reach it.
So Greg Bovino is back to his post at USBP in El Centro. There are many lovely hardworking Americans in El Centro but at a place to be it is not to everyone’s taste. I had a hearing in El Centro and drove there the night before because you can’t get there in the morning…../1

My own old office [1999-2002] in the Gas Company Tower is in this shot.
While Al Gore was being nominated for President in 2000, two miles away at the Convention Center, I was able to look down on the marchers in the Pershing Square 'free speech zone.'
A bit of an inflection point, in retrospect.
The firm’s moving to another building after 20 years. Went today to make some plans in the new space for when we move in June. Happy with the view from my office.

Is there anyone in the Trump inner circle who has the wherewithal to continue the Regime without Trump's amazing, and purely personal, Reality Distortion Field? Without the reflected 'glory' of Trump himself, they all seem so obviously small and loathsome, even to the believers, no?

A smart and wonderful piano trio record, and I have been remiss in not buying it these past 2-3 years. Will fix that, come #BandcampFriday [Feb 6 26]. Damned fine, this.

When Stephen Miller, eyes aflame and lips aflecked, refuses to go to Airplane Mode.
Trump rapid response: "After takeoff, the AF1 crew identified a minor electrical issue. Out of an abundance of caution, AF1 is returning to Joint Base Andrews. The President and team will board a different aircraft and continue on to Switzerland."

If "more training" was an effective strategy, every workplace of substantial size would be a Paradise of courtesy, decency and kindness by every measure by now.

Not to minimize the Red Menace, but all of the most immediately threatening perils to life, liberty, and the purfuit of American happineff are coming from inside the acquisitive capitalist house.

That ICE agents judge others by the color of their skin says a great deal about the content of ICE agents' character.

Robert Potts, former editor of Poetry Review and a critic who inspired me when I was starting out, has started a Substack about John Berryman’s 77 Dream Songs, after learning them all by heart. I just bought an old copy on eBay to keep to hand as I read along every week substack.com/home/post/p-...

Speaking as un homme américain d'un certain âge who cares little for sport in the day to day, but who has an ongoing multidecade sense of what the major recurring events in sport *are*, Army-Navy has not been a big deal in my adult lifetime. Always more relevant than Harvard-Yale, but not by much.
Marx remarks somewhere that historical events appear, as it were, twice: the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

He forgot to add that beneath the farce also can lurk tragedy.

What is with the upward serifs, on the letters T and A (and maybe U[?]), in the name of the Department?
Are they worried that birds -- doves perhaps -- might otherwise land or roost there?

A proper appreciation. I for one will never tire of Be-Bop Deluxe.
I scoured the San Fernando Valley in the summer of '75 to find a record shop that even knew they existed, let alone had a copy of "Futurama" on offer.
Toby Manning looks beyond woeful sleeve art to find the UK's underrated Be-Bop Deluxe, serving up a unique blend of art rock, pop prog and late period glam in 1976
