a: whats the best way to complete a complex complicated confusing project?
q: break it down. then break those down into smaller projects. continue until you can hold a piece in your brain. do one piece at a time start to finish. do the next, repeat til done. adjust along the way as needed.

q: what's the worst way to complete a complex complicated confusing project?
a: force fit it in your head. fool your self into thinking you understand it all tryna meet expectations/ deadline. max out your capacity and deathmarch forward repeating the mantra "git shit done".

refactor as part of "taking safe verifiable brain-sized baby steps to code the feature" (aka tdd). or refactor outside of tdd: sprinkled in during test-first or even edit-n-pray if you must; and or as tidying before and after the feature is done ...long as you do it.

Building Ikea furniture this weekend reminded me of two challenging life facts:
* If it's not aligned, more force won't help.
* If it's aligned, more force won't help.

bare minimum and just enough and leave well enough alone are all fine. but what's the standard? cus we have the option to go less defense and more offense, less reactive, more design and adventure.

code genies are dope but need guidance. rn im having it help me characterize some legacy mess. it tried several times to fix the bugs it finds. i have to remind it that we're in characterize mode. once i do that it's back in check. but it just goes to show that, in the wrong hands, . . .

... "when we write characterization tests we build up our knowledge of what the code actually does", type shit.
