This morning is cold & snowy, but yesterday the airport got 2.7mm of rain. And that's the airport's 3rd rainy day so far in December.
2024 also had 3 rainy December days, with the latest on the 21st.
A lot of Decembers will get at least 1. #yegwx #yeg

It's beginning to look a lot like #Christmas. Well, in Orillia it is, anyway. Discover what defines a #whitechristmas and a perfect Christmas, and see which Canadian cities are most and least likely to see snow on Dec. 25, based on decades of data. 🎅🎄❄️ www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weat...

All things considered, we’re doing pretty good this Fall. #ABwx #yeg #alberta
So it looks like November 27th will be the start of Edmonton's "lasting" snow for 2025-2026. #yegwx #yeg
That's pretty late.
Recently 2023 made it to December 4th.
And going a bit further back 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004, 2002 &1997 all held out a little bit longer.

So November 25th was Edmonton's first official -10°C of the winter. #yegwx #yeg
It's the first time that we've been down there since back on March 30th.
That's pretty late for a first -10°C, although 2023 got to November 30th, and 2016 & 2009 made it to December.

Last winter, November 22nd was when we got our first big jump in snowdepth, which then stayed with us through March.
2023 waited until December 4th, and after that it was pretty low-snow until a big March storm.
And 2015 made it to November 23rd.

Welcome to rock-bottom of Prairie winter, and this morning was RANK cold. 7-day forecast returns us to above seasonal temperatures (even >0°C). Even with this, I’m reminded December and January (until now) have been surprisingly above average. Weird La Niña pattern.

Above-freezing Highs in January aren't all that uncommon - we average around 13 per year.
Above-freezing *Lows* are a bit unusual though, with only 13 since 1990.
2023, 2022 & 2019 had them, and January 15th might give 2025 one.

Heavy action has certainly moved east the past few years. Not sure yet if this a result of a shift in patterns or because of increased detection (thanks to advancing technologies). Could very well be some combination of the two. #ABwx #yegwx
At the end of each year, NTP staff undertake a systematic review of satellite imagery to find any forest damage that may have been missed. In 2024, it turned up 14 new tornadoes. Add in a couple of stragglers, and the 2024 count goes up to 129. A busy year!

Definitely recommend.

Here in Alberta, if you don’t like the weather: wait 5 minutes.
In Edmonton, it takes a wee bit longer apparently.
The weather here is never boring, and the rollercoaster ride is always an adventure. That being said, La Niña is knocking and looking to hang out for a while.
