"In My Stride" by David Ruffin is a partial return to form. The disco production from Van McCoy returns for the final time but it is a little tempered from prior albums and the lyrics are somewhat better, giving Ruffin's vocals more of a chance to cut through.

1941's "The Little Foxes" fully brings 1900's South back. The movie is brimming with betrayal and the poison of greed, racism, and sexism adds resonance, but the slow as molasses pace badly dates the film. An electric Bette Davis performance redeems the movie, particularly the second half.

"Everything's Coming Up Love" by David Ruffin continues his ill-fated Van McCoy collaboration. This leans even farther into disco, further burying Ruffin's (faltering) vocals and resulting in a fairly generic album. It is a shame Ruffin's career faded out like this.

2014's "Get On Up" is most notable for Chadwick Boseman's performance as James Brown. Boseman nails the character and the performer, elevating a pedestrian script that is often painfully unsubtle. Nelsan Ellis is also excellent as Bobby Byrd and you cannot go wrong with using Brown's music.

"Who I Am" is David Ruffin and Van McCoy's first collaboration. Unfortunately, McCoy's maximalist tendencies often overshadow the already diminished Ruffin although choice cuts like "Love Can Be Hazardous" and "Walk Away From Love" show the approach's merit.

"Comic Book Cowboy" by Lera Lynn was one of my most anticipated 2025 releases and exceeded my hopes. More ethereal and jaded than her prior albums, Lera's songwriting still extols the simple joys and strikes the perfect musical balance of cohesiveness and variation.

1996's "Executive Decision" is a technically competent thriller that fails to differentiate itself. The special effects have aged very poorly and the movie is a good bit longer than it needs to be. Overall, this is the sort of film destined to be seen on cable or in a hotel and forgotten.

"Hard Headed Woman" by Margo Price features my pick for the song of 2025, "Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down", and keeps the momentum from that titanic opener. This is a tight and stylistically varied album that is both timely and bound to be a classic.

1986's "'Round Midnight" is shot like a documentary but this fictional story fails to create interest. However, the film benefits from a strong leading performance from Dexter Gordon, some lovely jazz, and evocative ambiance, making this a minor success despite the limp plot.

"Kids in the Street" by Justin Townes Earle shows off his diversity of talent, as he ranges through country, blues, rock, and R&B. However, the focus rightly falls on the strong batch of songs he penned (or in one case, adapted), which made him such a special artist.

"Story Songs of the Trains and Rivers" by Johnny Cash & The Tennessee Two is a somewhat stronger 1969 compilation of Cash's Sun tenure than "Get Rhythm." However, this largely means the good songs are better, although the unifying theme does also help.

"Get Rhythm" by Johnny Cash & the Tennessee Two rounds up some of Cash's recordings for Sun. While the 1969 release is scraping the bottom of the barrel, there's still a few solid tracks, although often a solid song is sabotaged by a poor instrumental or vice versa.

"Nobody Can Dance" by Big Star unearths 1974 rehearsal and live recordings. Like anything from their prime, it is essential listening for devoted fans, although more casual fans may not be blown away by the admittedly small changes present in the rehearsal recordings.

"Keep Me Singing" by Van Morrison is another low-key and sleepy release from Morrison's later career. Most of the songs are unremarkable but the blues influenced songs benefitted greatly from having an instrumental with a little grit.

The self-titled Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats album has the sound and vibe of a great Americana or soul album but the vocals frequently cross a line into parody. Additionally, the songs themselves are not compelling, so any flaw in the performances sticks out.

"Life in 1472" by Jermaine Dupri has nothing to do with a movie and does not explain the bizarre title. That lack of focus continues throughout the album, as Dupri feels like a subpar guest throughout. Rarely, the guests elevate the songs, but almost all fall flat.

Back in the day you could sing some nonsense like:

"My mama done told me

The blues in the night"

and it would still sound good

1999's "The Limey" benefits from its unorthodox editing and the strong central character. The 60s reunion angle is a additional small bonus. However, the plot and (especially) the script are only ok and the strengths of the movie can only barely carry it the finish line.

"Landing on a Hundred" is a sharp detour from Cody ChesnuTT. Cody resolved the contradictions that animated "The Headphone Masterpiece" and his newfound sense of purpose drives this retro styled decade-later follow up, resulting in a tighter and more enjoyable album.

Liz Phair's "Exile in Guyville" is a lot: lot of songs, lot of variety, lot of attitude, and a lot of influence. While a fair amount connects, the album ultimately felt too sprawling, as many of the songs paled in comparison to the best songs.

The short "A Secret Life" by Marianne Faithfull is an intriguing pairing with Angelo Badalamenti, which unfortunately sounds better on paper than on the album. The lyrics generally underwhelm and the instrumentals often do not gel with Faithfull's performances.

"Red Hot + Blue" features a whopping 20 songs covering or adapting Cole Porter tunes. Ultimately this AIDS fundraiser plays as an all encompassing 1990 smorgasbord. I personally enjoyed the Jungle Brothers and the Neville Brothers tracks the most.
