1999's "Drop Dead Gorgeous" is a deeply cynical look at a small Midwestern town and its beauty pageant. While the plot is not compelling and the mockumentary format dates the film, the performances bring this movie to life, bringing enough laughs to make this a fun watch despite the grim tone.

"Sylvie" by Sylvie Simmons is the longtime music critic's first album. While the lyrics are solid, the overly simple instrumentals put too pressure on her vocals and lyrics, which makes the slightly more complex "My Lips Still Taste of You" the clear highpoint.

RFK Jr/MAHA world say they're not reducing access to vaccines for anyone who wants them, only giving people "choice" to opt out.
But by refusing to even review new vaccines, yes, they are absolutely blocking those who want a new immunization from ever having access to it.

2. The decision shows that FDA can't be trusted, because the FDA spelled out for Moderna exactly what it wanted in a drug submission. Moderna followed those instructions, and the FDA rejected the application anyhow without reviewing it. Goodbye US drug development.

[THREAD] Why it matters that the FDA is refusing to review Moderna's application for an mRNA based influenza vaccine.

1. Flu is a perpetual threat to human health, because it sometimes mutates and sparks major, deadly pandemics (including the 1918 flu). Our best defense is vaccines.
"US regulators will not review Moderna’s request to license a new, potentially more effective flu shot – even though the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) previously gave the green light to the project ..."

"D&B Together" by Delaney and Bonnie is both bland and a mess. This album was originally withdrawn before being sold to another label and the unfocused and overstuffed album clearly demonstrates why. A lone Duane Allman appearance keeps this from being a 1/5.

"The Panther!" by Dexter Gordon is a well built mix of tunes that exudes an infectious and confident cool. While much of the second half is too laid back for its own good, the remainder is well designed to show off the considerable talents of Gordon and his band.

"The Sidewinder" by Lee Morgan fully lives up its classic status, as Morgan's compositions are excellent and the band expertly brings them to life. This is jazz that is both complex enough to be rewarding and straightforward enough to be enjoyable in any setting.

Not sure Van Morrison ever came closer to doing yacht rock than this song, which is a shame because the song is a banger.

"The Amazing Bud Powell, Vol. 1" captures Powell at the top of his career and with an incredible set of musicians surrounding him at both sessions heard here. While all the master takes were strong, "Un Poco Loco" stood out as a highlight due to the Latin percussion.

"Spirituals and Shout Songs from the Georgia Coast" by The McIntosh County Shouters is a vibrant demonstration of their "so old it is new" style. Ultimately I did not feel it worked for me as an audio only experience but it sounds like it would be engaging live.

1958's "Cry Terror!" is a decent thriller that primarily makes an impact through the strong cast led by James Mason and Inger Stevens. The plot is strained and unimaginative but serviceable and the cinematography is solid, creating a satisfying if fairly unremarkable film.

"The Lost Tapes" gathers long forgotten early 70's concert recordings of Ian & Sylvia that were rediscovered in Sylvia's home. While the album is far too long, all the songs are pleasant to listen to if not memorable, and some of the unexpected covers are true gems.

1951's "Detective Story" is a hopelessly dated melodrama that sinks under the weight of its dialogue. Kirk Douglas does his best to save the movie but the shocking for the time plot just doesn't hold the same power today and the cinematography is nothing special.

"At the Gate of Horn" or "Mother Earth" as my copy is known captures Memphis Slim performing with a horn section and an electric guitarist. Outside of a couple songs, this is generic blues fare with the sax section often overshadowing the rest of the performance.

"Live at Club 47" by Doc Watson is a shockingly high quality audience tape of a 1963 gig. While too long and meandering, this is a great document of Watson's live show shortly before he became famous and is a consistently enjoyable listen.

1990's "A Shock to the System" is a devilish comedy with modest aspirations that are wholly fulfilled. The cast is quite good and while the cinematography is nothing special and the plot is quite basic the film comes together nicely as a low stakes revenge film.

"So Runs the World Away" by Josh Ritter avoids the prior album's mixing problems but often distracting production leads to an inferior set of songs. The lyrics are the high point but are not compelling, leaving only the Waits esque "Rattling Locks" worth revisiting.

"The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter" frontloads its two best songs, which builds excitement for the album before the poor mixing and challenging vocals become apparent. The lyrics were definitely a high point but they're not strong enough to carry this album.

1973's "Electra Glide in Blue" is a breathtakingly shot and breathtakingly cynical movie about a motorcycle cop that yearns to be more. The senseless violence of Vietnam hangs over the film, as does America's inability to bridge the divides that produce a slow moving nightmare.

"Nothing Personal" by Delbert McClinton has an exceptional A side but the B side is overwhelmed by melancholy songs that run together. The instrumentals are on the plain side, which helps the lyrics cut through but also places a tremendous amount of pressure on them.
