Our wildlife is so depleted we pounce on observations where we can. This pile of crabapples is the work of rats living in my dead hedge pile and will serve as an easily accessible larder. The fruit would quickly rot in their tunnels so they keep it outside. Clever!

I stopped feeding birds several years ago to deter rats only to spot one outside my bathroom window gorging itself on borage seeds which I was planning to collect for bees!
