So happy to be part of this! Probably the most complete review so far on free-range chicken behavior and welfare 🐓. A must-read if you want to see how the field started, where we are now, and what’s next!
It took almost a year to write this review on causes and consequences of ranging in chicken 🐔! This was a huge collaborative effort by @ecobird.bsky.social @pec-exeter.bsky.social and @vitorhbf.bsky.social ! I am very proud of the outcome. Leaving Utrecht after my first #ISAE — what a great experience! Amazing people, science, and even karaoke in front of a passionate crowd of animal behaviour & welfare researchers. And to top it off, my PhD student won Best Poster out of 300! 10/10, would recommend! ☺️ #ISAE2025

🎉 First paper as last author & PhD supervisor! Congrats to Jeanne Seressia and the team 👏
🐤Do more sociable quail sync better?
✅ Yes — those selected for high social motivation often rested together. Social cohesion or social buffering?
More studies to come!

🚨🎉🥳 I’m very happy to announce that after 2 failed attempts (with not-so-great projects 😅), my #ANR JCJC project CADO is funded!
More chicken science 🐔 coming.
CADO (like gift 🎁 in French) will explore how domestication & selective breeding shaped chicken minds. So excited for what’s coming next.

What are we talking about when we're talking about "cognition"?

Terminology in this field has become confused and confusing. While writing our recent review, we tried to structure terms for our own sanity, and provide a template in a Glossary

What if chickens are actually paying attention to us? 👀🐔
They recognize individual humans, react to our gaze, voice & gestures, learn by watching us & may even be reassured by our presence 💛.

Had a scientific blast in Sweden!
First, the PhD defense of now Dr Johanna Gjøen 🎓
Then the Animal Welfare Symposium,
where I presented our work on human–chicken interactions 🐔 👨🏻👩🏻
So many great people and conversations.
Now taking a few days to enjoy the holidays in beautiful Stockholm 🇸🇪✨

Thanks to the @ecobird.bsky.social
team for the warm welcome these past two days! I really enjoyed sharing ideas, learning about their work on chickens and quail, and having great conversations. Hoping for fruitful collaborations in the future! @katywillcox.bsky.social @birgitszabo.bsky.social

Just out! 🐣 Our recent study suggests chickens can see humans as a safe haven. Birds that received gentle handling stayed calmer in stressful situations when a familiar person was present. 💛 #animalbehavior #humananimalrelationship #chickencognition

Just submitted a new manuscript on the chicken-human relationship! 🐓Spoiler: Investigating whether humans can act as social buffers for chickens in stressful situations. It’s been a while since my last submission—missed this feeling! Hopefully, more to come on this topic in the future.

I wrote (ranted) on experimental design as I was frustrated as an editor at how little guidance students were getting. I underestimated the interest in the issue: it has been downloaded 10,000+ times! Clearly it’s something we need to be talking about more. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
Principles of experimental design for ecology and evolution
Here I argue that we do not discuss experimental design, often until it is too late. This editorial seeks to begin a conversation about how and where to replicate appropriately.
