HISTORY OF PHYSICS

In April 1961 there was a big Centennial Celebration at MIT. Naturally it was a proud, joyous, even intoxicating Celebration. At the week-long event there was a panel discussion on “The Future of Physics”, chaired by Francis Low, with four speakers in the following order:

HISTORY OF PHYSICS

(As told by Yang Chen-Ning)

Enrico Fermi had a very interesting way of working on a manuscript. When corrections were to be made, he would cut out portions to be deleted and scotch-tape on additions. As a result, some pages became long rolls of paper.

HISTORY OF PHYSICS

When Paul Dirac was awarded the Nobel in 1933, he wanted to refuse it, as he hated advertising. However, Rutherford managed to persuade him to accept the award – he simply explained that a refusal would be an even bigger advertisement.

He then agreed to go to Stockholm.
