Suspended in the galleries are two 8m long scrolls (Evening/Morning) created by Benin artist Isaac Erhabor Emokpae in response to the burnt carved ivory altar tusk in the Benin display. The tusk was blackened in the fire that engulfed the Oba's Palace during the British attack on Benin City in 1897.

Duality is an important principle in Benin culture. Isaac Erhabor Emokpae's artwork evokes the darkness of colonial violence but also the survival of the Benin people & the hope of a brighter future. Using traditional & modern figures, he reminds us that life goes on & people survive and thrive.
