Despite the importance of data about what happens in public on online platforms, there is no shared framework for how research, journalism, and independent investigations should be conducted with public platform data. The Better Access framework we released today provides that. Incredible work!

Taylor Swift’s new album “combines bawdiness with a certain impulse toward conservatism,” our columnist Ross Douthat writes. “In that sense it’s an appropriate text for the Trump era, when coarseness and right-wing politics have been married in a distinctive way.”

"We get through most days in life without having to really think about death, which also means that we don’t spend a lot of time dwelling on the remarkable fact that we are alive." Astonishing writing, beautiful piece.
I've just written about my intense relationship with my father and how running helped me both connect with him and avoid becoming him. It's my first article ever for @theatlantic.com My dad wrote here in 1967, and it seems fitting to publish this 58 years later.

In addition to being an awful story about real people’s lives, it’s also an amazing microcosm or synechdoche or something for the bigger picture.

After a sweeping social media ban, Nepal saw its bloodiest unrest in decades. What has happened in Nepal is a warning to other democracies to tread carefully with efforts to contain online expression, writes Samik Kharel.

When we rebuild our public media up from the ashes it will need to be much bigger, bolder, and better funded -- not so dependent on private capital and corporate sponsorships, but truly public. It will need to be more democratic, more independent, and capable of withstanding two-bit fascist regimes.
