During the longest federal government shutdown in American history, as 5.5 million Californians went weeks without critical SNAP (CalFresh) food assistance and other income supports, United Ways and 211s were there for Californians to help fill in the gaps.

Last year, the CalEITC, Young Child Tax Credit, and Foster Youth Tax Credit put $1.4 billion back in Californians’ pockets. Free tax prep sites like those operated by the United Way network help ensure that eligible community members access these valuable credits.

In California, we rely on farmworkers for the food that fuels our state and economy. However, many farmworkers—particularly those from immigrant communities—are paying into our tax system but are not receiving taxpayer benefits.

The last government shutdown in 2018 was the longest in history at 35 days. As we are a few days into the current government shutdown, we don’t yet have a clear picture on when this one may end.
