Musicians create the enormous wealth that streaming companies like Spotify generate for their CEOs and the major record record labels year after year. But while the rich keep getting richer in the music industry, the streaming platforms are paying the musicians themselves next to nothing. Companies like Spotify pay out just a tiny fraction of a penny per play. It’s a totally unsustainable model for artists, and there is currently little to no regulation, no minimum wage for music streaming. The Living Wage for Musicians Act would finally change that. The bill would require streaming services to pay a fair, additional royalty payment directly to artists. We need Congress to take action now and create a music economy that actually pays musicians. Send your message: Spotify and other streaming platforms must pay artists fairly! Tell Congress to pass the Living Wage for Musicians Act NOW! Spotify claims that one of its core goals is to give “a million creative artists the opportunity to live off their art.” Yet, to generate a single dollar on the platform, a song needs to be streamed 263 times. Compounding artists’ anger at the company, Spotify has still not changed its policy regarding running ICE recruitment ads on the platform. Further, the streaming giant’s former CEO Daniel Ek invested millions of his Spotify earnings into military technologies. The Living Wage for Musicians Act is built to pay artists a minimum penny per stream, a basic raise that musicians should have received a long time ago from the wealthy streaming platforms. This royalty would be paid out directly to artists, so the major labels and other middlemen can’t steal from artists. The Act would only pay out human creators, ensuring that Big Tech AI companies are not further taking over the streaming market. Congress can’t allow Spotify and other streaming platforms to rake in millions while robbing artists. Sign the petition: Musicians deserve fair payment for streaming!
