Malcolm Gillespie or 'Gillespie The Gauger' was executed by hanging in the outdoor gallows of Aberdeen. He had been convicted of forging treasury bills.
During his 28 years of work he seized over of 20,000 gallons of spirit.

This new apparatus is called a 'spirit safe'.

Dail-Uaine Distillery is opened by William Mackenzie. Famously the first distillery to be crowned by a Charles Doig pagoda roof.
However this wouldn't arrive until 1889 as Charles was yet to be born when the distillery first opened!

The Lowland distillery of St. Magdalene, Linlithgow has been acquired by D.C.L, W.P Lowrie (a Glasgow blending house) and John Walker & Son Ltd.
"The distillery will be kept as an active producer by these three concerns in combination"

D.C.L announces the closure of its Grange Distillery at Burntisland (Est 1795) and Sciennes Distillery (Est 1849)in Edinburgh.
Both are used to store whisky from other distilleries for a time, but would never produce spirit again.

A £100,000 extension to the Old Bushmills Distillery is officially opened by Lord Coleraine.

The extension, which comprises a bottling and blending department and a new warehouse, was described by Lord Coleraine as "an act of faith in the future."

Capt. Iain Tennant, chairman of Glenlivet & Glen Grant distilleries warns in his annual report of over-production in the industry. Their production has increased 60% in 3 years.
Profits will depend on this extra output being taken up.

The last coal delivery is made to Clynelish distillery. One of the reasons for being located in Brora was it's proximity to a local coalfield, of which the stocks have now been exhausted. From now on the distillery will be oil-fired.

The Glasgow Steamer Acolite ships the largest consignment of whisky ever from Tobermory Distillery. 164 casks containing 87,000 proof gallons, representing £250k of duty.
The steamer (pictured) was built in 1885 by J.G Kincaid, Greenock

Missing Mouser!
Peat the cat is missing from Highland Park distillery.
The team of three cats, Barley, Malt and Peat have become a much loved part of the distillery team since joining in 1992.
Sadly Peat passed away young.

A special train of 18 wagons leaves Towiemore Distillery for Glasgow, to be blended for export.
Founded in 1896 by Peter Dawson, liquidated & sold to S.M.D in 1930 & is now the site of company specialising in distillery engineering.

The current recession is being blamed for these cost-saving measures.

From what I can find out it didn't sell, and the Fay family went bankrupt a decade later

The upper floor of one of the warehouses at Clydesdale/Wishaw distillery collapses, causing several casks to fall and burst onto the floor below.
The site last distilled in 1916 after purchase by S.M.D; and is now a retail park.

Lurgan Distillery of Messrs. Greer & Boyd in County Armagh, is destroyed by fire.
Casks were rescued from the warehouses and rolled into nearby fields as the premises was reduced to 'one scathed un-shapely mass of bare walls and smoking ruins'.
