Eternal Sunset
Mayano thought she had found things that twinkled before. It’s in the hems of a white dress, woven intricately for a vow of love. It’s in the dew upon the grass, shimmering under her feet as she runs. Sometimes, she even sees it in the eyes of others and thinks her own eyes hold them too. It’s never quite enough, though. Never twinkly enough. Never bright enough. Never quite right for the shine in her dreams. And then, she sees her. The setting sun, she’s told, is most beautiful at the end. And as she watches the Brian run, she realizes that’s true. Brian twinkles in a way that Mayano couldn’t have ever imagined before. With bated breath, Mayano prepares to take off to follow. She knows the twinkle she wants to chase. This sunset she will prolong eternally, brighter than anything, beautiful beyond compare.

Love Language
Madara doesn’t know how to say I love you — they are words that feel too heavy for him to carry. Maybe it’s because he’s spent too long simply being an observer to love. Maybe it’s because he was born to be so. But he still needs words to express these feelings, the ones that swell from inside of him when he wakes up in the morning and he realizes that he’s not alone. That dawn has come, and Kohaku is still here all the same. Nothing seems sufficient. Thank you, seems so perfunctory. Why? would simply lead to Kohaku to roll his eyes, yet petting Madara’s cheek to comfort him all the same. So, as Kohaku opens his eyes, Madara spills the first thing that comes to mind: “I want to eat the breakfast you make everyday,” he says. Kohaku stares at him for a second. Still bleary from sleep, he doesn’t quite have the time to process what Madara had just said. After a beat of silence, he laughs. “What if I want to eat the breakfast ya make instead?” He asks. “I deserve to be lazy too, some days.” “And today?” Madara asks. Kohaku sinks his head against the pillow. And ah, he’s so divine like this. “Make me breakfast, Madara-han.” And doing that too, would be easier than saying the words I love you, yet express it all the same.

his favorite mistake
Sometimes Kohaku looks at him with a scowl that forces Madara to confront what he believes he already knows: that Kohaku realizes that he’s a mistake. Madara reminds himself of this, every once in a while. Whenever things get too tender between them. Whenever their lips meet and there’s a second of pause for them to think and his mind overwhelms him even though he wishes for otherwise. It shouldn’t hurt. He should know. And isn’t it the truth? Shouldn’t he be pragmatic enough to accept that? But it’s always Kohaku who makes it so hard to feel like a mistake. Because after the scowl would come a hold of his hand. After the silence there will always come another kiss, or another embrace, or another whisper of his name that is far too affectionate to be true. He is a mistake, he knows. But he seems to be Kohaku’s favorite mistake to make.

“a sunset for two”
She used to want to grow up as quickly as possible. Maybe, when she’s large enough, she will finally be able to find that sparkle she’s looking for. She will be able to find it in places she’s never reached before — or perhaps, she will find that having grown, the sparkles will finally take form upon the surface of her skin. But she’s stopped wanting to, now. It’s because she found her sparkle, yes. The most beautiful, the most blinding, all when she runs next to Brian. She doesn’t have to grow to see it, she simply has to be who she is when Brian is by her side. Yet at the same time, it’s because she wants to keep it. If she’s grown up, what's next? Would the sparkle before her be different? Or worse, would it be gone entirely? So, she wants to stay here for now. She wants to run with the most beautiful sparkle or gold, right beside her. Belonging to her, like a sunset for two.

the sparkle of a moon
“So, how long do you want me to race you for?” Brian expected something like until I win or, considering that this is Mayano, until I’m all grown up and find the sparkle I want. The sparkle she really wants, that is. Bright and permanent and hers, not whatever semblance of which she sees when she’s with Brian. Mayano thinks, but just for a second. She shakes her head with a pout. “I’m not letting you quit!” she exclaims. “Wha-“ Brian has to hold back before she exclaims a little too loudly. She clears her throat. “You can’t expect me to run forever.” “Why not?” “Because it’s unreasonable,” Brian huffs. “I am unreasonable!” Mayano says, possibly more proudly than she should. “And that’s why I want to continue to see you sparkle, okay? Forever.” One day Mayano will find a sparkle that’s true. A sparkle that hers. One day, she might not need Brian anymore. But for now, Brian indulges herself in the idea that she is needed by someone meant to be her own sun.

(or, I was dragged in to watched the movie the other day)
They can see it in my stead. Those are a coward’s words, she knows, right from the start even though at the time she doesn’t let it show. Pretty words of someone who had won just enough but has never broken the boundaries of heaven. They’re the words of a mortal, easy one that pulls wool over one’s eyes, just so that she doesn’t have to see the state her own body is in. The leg that can no longer run. That throbs in pain, reminding her that she’s no longer able to fulfill the destiny of her birth. But those words do not blind Pocket. Or perhaps they simply do not deter her from what she wants, even if she doesn’t understand the truth. Pocket pulls her hand and grins. “You gotta see it together with me,” she says. “I’ll drag you there myself.” And a coward, maybe, can believe in a hope again instead of a lie.
