Conversations on the potential of restoring seagrass and salt marsh habitats to store carbon hosted by @ucdearth.bsky.social

A hugely informative event; as Govt scrambles to meet sectoral targets, consideration on these habitats needs further attention.

Sobering piece in @theguardian.com by Dr Ruth Leeney of @ucddublin.bsky.social on her deep-sea sharks research, and how marine life is being ravaged by bottom trawling.

I’m obsessed with deep sea sharks: their bioluminescent spots are just visible in the pitch black environment they live in
Most of these little-known but already endangered fish have never been seen alive in their natural habitat, but are under threat from bottom trawling and deep-sea mining

"In 2024, the State added just 1,573 hectares of new forest, the lowest number in nearly 80 years."

Great to read this excellent piece in @irishtimes.com by Jeremy (an Earth Institute journalist in residence) on why Irish farmers are not taking advantage of grants and getting involved in forestry.
To meet its climate goals, Ireland must radically expand tree cover. To that end, it offers generous incentives to farmers who forest their lands. Most can earn more money from forestry than from raising livestock.

Despite this, tree planting is at its lowest level since 1946.

My new story:
Most farmers could earn more money by planting trees - why don’t they?
Tree planting in Ireland is at its lowest level since 1946 despite grants and premiums
