Hypothesis: The emphasis in writing advice on word counts predisposes overwriting. Experiment: Set content goals (describe the house, explain the families, express her emotions) and reach them in as few words as possible. Solving that puzzle means better writing and more fun than typing word storms.

It's gotten where pretty much anyone opining about inflammation can be dismissed as full of it. Inflammation is the latest version of stuff like the humor-imbalance hypothesis. It's another vague catch-all explanation for any and every health condition. And the quacks hawk their cures for it.

I guess editors don't get enough love, because many of them seem taken aback when complimented. But it's an art, and it deserves appreciation.
