Hello! I guess I never properly introduced myself here. I'm Thomas and currently finalizing my PhD thesis on optimizing power systems with AI.
I left the university to build software for scientific publishing. I'm quite unhappy with its current state and want to contribute improving it. 1/2
Whenever I do a peer review, I do all my annotations in the PDF, then waste time rewriting it all into a text review. Double work and so much information lost. Why can’t we just review in the PDF? Just me?

Finally submitted my PhD thesis!

Now, I have time to do some coding for reviewersearch.net again.
And probably some days of rest are also a good idea? Weird feeling to finally have this done.

The first article in RJIM!

For-profit publishers are increasingly dominating scientific publications. $$APCs are growing and your work is paywalled, so they can make profit margins larger than Google’s.

So 2 dozen researchers and I created RJIM…

To the journal editors here: What is your approach for selecting reviewers for a submitted paper?
What minimal requirements should the reviewer fulfill (e.g. years of experience, numbers of publications)? Do you have tools for finding reviewers?
I would be grateful for every answer. Thank you!

I'm looking for a reasonably-priced all-in-one conference solution--something to manage ~100 proposals in a few different categories and ~150 conference registrants. #AERA uses AllAcademic, but that seems overpowered for this situation. Does anybody have suggestions?

Q for my fellow Assoc/Asst Editor types (ie the kind that request reviewers): How strong a role should editors play in rejecting articles that may be perfectly good science, but study issues/have findings that are VERY well covered in the field, just with a slightly different sample or geography?

AI helps write a peer-reviewed economics paper in one hour. Not a draft. Not an outline. A published paper that passed peer review in a respected journal.

And that's not even the most interesting part of this story...

Who is the better peer reviewer choice? A young postdoc who published 1-3 papers on exactly the topic of the submitted manuscript or the experienced prof with hundreds of publications (and reviews) in the general domain of the submitted manuscript? General expertise vs. specific expertise. Opinions?

40% of 2024 articles in Preventing Chronic Disease (CDC's online journal) are missing.

Just did a quick count of 2024. I know missing articles go further back.

What's missing: tuftscloud-my.sharepoint.com/:x:/g/person...

Critically, because PCD is OA, everything is on archive.org

Are there any engineering or computer science people here that I should follow? I feel alone. These fields seem to be underrepresented here?

Well, that was successful. No answers whatsoever, only a like from a tarot cards account, very scientific 😂

I’ll try with tags #Academicsky #neuroskyscience

Even if you don’t have an answer, I would appreciate a repost to reach someone who might have it. Thank you!
Hey everyone, I’m tired of constantly switching methods to keep track of papers I read for later use in writing. Anyone have a solid system for organizing papers with notes so it’s easier to pull up specific concepts, hypotheses, or results when drafting? Open to any tips!

Just submitted the main results of my doctoral thesis to a prestigious conference 🥳 Wish I had more time to improve the manuscript, but anyway, time to relax and wait for the reviews 😌

In my field, more and more researcher seem to agree that everyone should have an @orcid.org ID. What about other disciplines? Is ORCID gaining traction there as well?
