Or, at least, everyone thinks it's only seven that have fallen. December Holiday didn’t fit in with the rest of the Holiday family. But no one paid that any mind, because of course she wouldn’t look just like her mom and her (late) dad. After all, she’d been adopted. So, yes, her nose and hooves were glossier, her eyes were bigger and never seemed to blink, her head was simply enormous, and her fur was longer and shaggier, her antlers were soft and bendable—but so what, thought the people of Snowdin—so what if she was from a different family of reindeer monsters? It had been Carol and Rudy (bless his memory) who had taken her in; she was the star batter in every Junior League ice baseball game (like ice hockey, but with baseball), even if she could only play in short bursts before overheating and having to go take an ice bath; and she was also surprisingly skilled with a guitar as long as she took her hooves off first. Monsters came in all shapes and sizes, so of course there was no such thing as a shape or size that didn’t fit in. And Dess fit in with Snowdin just fine. “Um… D-Do you really think we have to kill… all the humans?” Noelle asked, being braver than she’d ever been in her entire life. “What if… there are nice ones?” “Huh. Never thought about that. I think it’s too easy for humans to hurt monsters, so Asgore probably won’t take that risk. It’d probably be cruel to stick the nice ones underground once we’ve taken back the surface, but maybe we can just… wall off some sort of nature preserve for ‘em. What do you think, Dess?” Dess’s spirits had sunk and her mood had soured with each word. Her disguise had never seemed so paper-thin, not even when that one adult had started insisting to everyone in town that she was just a human in a furry costume pretending to be a monster and Carol had had to get a restraining order on him that made it impossible for his family to live anywhere in Snowdin. “Well, aren’t you interesting? I thought I’d had everyone here all figured out.” The drawl that rang in her ears and circled her in a slow, foreboding arc was high, soft, yet dripping with menace. A golden flower popped up from amid the others by her feet. It looked like any of the other golden flowers growing in the garden, except it was smiling at her. “I shouldn’t have given up after you wiffle-batted me into next week. Who knew you hid such secrets?” Noelle had been terrified of a so-called talking flower once, and Dess had assuaged her fear by finding the offending flower and smashing it with a wiffle bat until it was nothing but a pile of dirt. This, she immediately realized, was the very same flower, and here she was, batless. The flower circled around her, and suddenly, she realized there were more things in this world to be afraid of than just humans and monsters. A root climbed up her leg and squeezed. “Golly, if I’d known there was another human soul down here all this time, I would’t have spent so long waiting.” The flower’s grin grew fangs. “Better late than never!”
