DRAWING IN THE SNOW: I’m from Los Angeles, where snow is exotic. I never want it to melt. If I’m lucky I get a window, but sometimes I’ve just sat out in it to draw something fabulous, like that courtyard wall up in the Grand Bazaar. #snow #architecture #citylife

First winter in Istanbul, 2004-5. I lived at the bottom of Sultanahmet, carried my sketchbook always, & everywhere I looked my eyes were happy. Much of this is still here but nothing looks the same. #architecture #citylife #istanbul🇹🇷

ODE TO CRUMB: My ode to Robert Crumb, the genius who invented Underground Comics, whose work has remained a lodestar throughout my career. Shown here in 1996 with some of his favorite things. Created online, drawn by hand with several programs. #digitalart #comics #portrait

BOUKOLEON SNOW: The best view I ever had: Lingering lonely by the side of the Highway for a century, the ruin of the 9thCentury Boukoleon Palace endured storms, blizzards & neglect before its present restoration. But it was beautiful. #byzantine #architecture #istanbul🇹🇷

I’m really glad I got these drawings & photos of Hagia Sophia when I could! The grand old dame has been through many changes since then, so here’s a look from before. #hagiasophia #drawing #architecture

Anybody else out there as fascinated as I am by the Black Dahlia? The most famous unsolved mystery of Los Angeles: since 1947 it’s inspired books & movies & this painting: SHOE FEVER from my Black Dahlia series. Details only!#blackdahlia #shoes #mysteries

After 9 years I’m making Kitty Angels again for Christmas. Hard to make!! Takes days & days. But each is a portrait of a particular cat. This one is the late Truffles, destined for a family Christmas tree in California, when America opens up again to overseas mail. #christmas #ornaments #cats

The best ideas come when you’re just fooling around: vintage digital art from the 1980s & 90s. All this stuff started as digital doodles, & some of it wound up winning awards. Also I learned a lot! These were created in Los Angeles, California, USA. #digital #macart #art

Walking & riding with a sketchbook open through the streets & bazaars of Istanbul. Occasionally I’d sit down for a couple of hours & catch these big drawings, moments frozen in time. #illustration #drawing #istanbul

Oh the times we had… Little Ygor & big fat Pinkie were friends & lovers for many years. Both sleep together in the churchyard now; ghost kitties flitting through the trees. They live in my drawings, Kitty Angels forever in my heart. #cat #drawing #portrait

Clip art I created freehand in MacPaint, online with a mouse in 1986. Each image here took a week to build. I kept vampire hours; the best stuff happened between midnight & 4AM, working mostly to Mozart, & The Grateful Dead. You could buy this stuff on a floppy disk & use it.

I spent from 1984-1999 in Los Angeles with my nose glued to a workstation, creating art online. This stuff was all commercial, used in games & ads, created online on the Mac as it evolved. Exciting times! The only follow-up was to move to Turkey. #digitalart #mac #game

Lucky if you can catch them asleep! In India & Kyrgyzstan, in Van, Kapadokya, Istanbul & Kas & in the US, kids are all around the edges of my drawings, & sometimes they just take over. #kids #children #drawing #portrait

Wings mean power. From ancient Djinns, Gorgons & bird-footed tomb musicians through Byzantine cave archangels & classic Christian deities to nightmare Bosch characters & the digital Angel of Destruction, mighty winged icons have always been with us. #angel #drawing #wings #power

Everybody loves the Dervishes. Centuries ago in Konya, the poet Rumi would spin in the streets in ecstatic prayer. This has become the stylized ritual seen today, if you’re lucky, in Turkey. There are many sects of Dervishes & here we see some up close. #dervish #drawing #portrait #ritual #prayer

Marrakech 2013: Thanks to a generous patron, a happy respite in Morocco with my sister after a summer of civil unrest in Istanbul. We stayed at his riad in the souk & I never stopped drawing. And now we have these pictures! #morocco #portrait #marketplace #drawing

Fabulous faces caught on the fly in Istanbul. All drawn from life: on the tram, out in front of the harbor, at cafes & in the street & in a concert at Hagia Irene, making these memories indelible. #portrait #drawing #penandink #istanbul #faces

BaiKERS IN EPHESUS: Love the surreal contrasts found wandering around in St John’s Basilica & Ephesus. The bikers (“Ride with Pride”) told me they were from Iran. Grabbed a photo & when I looked up they were gone. #portrait #drawing #ephesus #stjohns

Y’know, I don’t think I’ll bother posting on Blue Sky anymore. Nobody here seems to be looking at my posts, & hardly any likes. I get a nice feedback on my 4 other platforms. So have fun, kids, talking to each other!

Visible History: the 9thCentury Byzantine Boukoleon Palace was burnt by Crusaders in 1204, lived in by families for centuries, dynamited by the British & the Sultan in 1888 for the Orient Express Railway, further demolished in 1963 to build the Shore Road (Kennedy Caddesi). Every bit of that shows…

The Ottoman Coke Kiosk, 2014. This fabulous chunk of Ottoman splendor, probably 18thC Tulip Period, started life as a water reservoir in Eminonu before being moved to Zeynep Sultan Camii (1769) in Sultanahmet. Took me 2 weeks to draw these echoes in marble. #architecture #istanbul

Istanbul’s old wooden houses, survivors from a time of Ottoman splendor. Some are beautifully restored, others fit only for destruction. Once in the Old City, one collapsed in a storm. By nightfall it had vanished- into the neighborhood stoves. #architecture #istanbul #drawing

Hagia Sophia: Look Closer. 1500 years of history in the details: forgotten arches & other architectural artifacts, magnificent doors, thresholds shaped by time, Crusader graffiti, the cracked floor now covered with carpet, & the late Gül Kedi, 16 years Queen Cat in the great basilica. #hagiasophia

My boyfriends all live in museums… every fabulous face & body there, radiating masculine beauty & power, was posed by an actual ancient hottie. Most back then didn’t live so long, but now they live forever. #archeology #men #art #museums #ancient
