Massive pile of 100 ft hydro cables. You've gotta get the hydros down that deep to get away from the surface wave sound. Hear whales sing: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/hum... #fieldrecording #humpbackwhales

To get a wide stereo image, the minimum spacing for omni microphones is about 40 cm. To get an equivalent stereo image with an omni hydrophone you need a minimum spacing of about 2 meters (because sound travels 4-5 times faster in water): thomasrexbeverly.com/products/hum...

Historically, most underwater recordings are made in mono. That works well for researchers. But stereo, quad, and 3D setups are possible...and the spatialization makes the listening experience SO MUCH BETTER. Here are a few setups I used in Hawaii. Listen here: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/haw...

The 100 ft quad snake went into this custom breakout box. Then the 4 colored hydro cables split out to the corners of the PVC pipe mount points. Hear the humpback whale George Gershfin that I recorded with this custom Gladys hydro array: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/hum... #fieldrecording #whales

I recorded with these Gladys hydros for so long that the copper grounding wire started to corrode. Hear the musical whales I recorded in my new sound library: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/hum... #humpbackwhales #whalesong #fieldrecording #listening

I made friends with some whales when I sunk this giant hydrophone array down 100 ft in Hawaii. Some musical greats swam by and sang: Frank Finatra, George Gershfin, Miles Wavis, and Fluke Ellington. Hear more whale music in my new sound library: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/hum... #whalesong

I now understand why the Roger Payne' s"Songs of the Humpback Whale" album sold 100,000 copies in the 1970s. These whales truly make music. 50 years later after that groundbreaking album, I've made some new recordings with modern hydros in a 3D array. Hear them: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/hum...

Recording Humpback Whales in 3D – 8 Gladys hydros hanging from the boat to make a giant rectangular prism. These are (probably) the world's first 3D recordings of humpback whales. Hear more in my new sound library: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/haw... #fieldrecording #humpbackwhales

RECORDING WHALES IN 3D – Take my word for it. Don't try to build a PVC pipe frame, attach 8 hydrophones to it, and then sink it down 100 ft. It is almost impossible. But I made what are (probably) the world's first 3D recordings of humpback whales. Listen here: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/haw...

The whales I've been recording have beautiful musical voices, so I channeled my dad joke energy to come up with some names: Frank Finatra, George Gershfin, Miles Wavis, Reef Jarrett, Claude Debusea, Fluke Ellington, Louis Seastrong, Fluke Ellington. Hear them: thomasrexbeverly.com/products/haw...
