The Trees of Ogden

Living in the community of Ogden, Calgary, I take pictures of the trees I see when I’m walking around my neighborhood.

I use ChatGPT, PictureThis and PlantNet to help identify the trees. If you think I got it wrong, let me know what you think it is :)
There aren’t many trees in #Calgary with red leaves in autumn but here we have a Showy Mountain Ash (Sorbus decora) along the Bow River.

Autumn is coming and the trees are already changing colours. Here’s a Green Ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica). From ChatGPT: In #Calgary and the Prairie provinces, Green Ash is 1 of the most common boulevard trees because it’s hardy in cold winters and tolerates urban conditions

Things are happening in #Ogden! A community micro-forest has been planted off 18 St SE and the on ramp to Glenmore Trail West.

Will be cool to follow this over the years!

A pear tree! Maybe a Ure pear tree ( Pyrus ussuriensis × Pyrus communis as it is as hybrid).

According to ChatGPT it is the most common backyard hardy pear across the prairies and colder Canadian regions

Now we just need a partridge and we’ll be ready for Christmas!

An apple tree (Malus pumila)!

“The domesticated apple is a remarkable tree having been used for millennia as a dessert and cooking fruit, and as the raw material for brewing cider” <— from University of Oxford

This was a nice change. Instead of a sign saying the tree was going to be cut down, it was a sign saying don’t cut this tree down, it’s worth $22k. Another tree had the same sign.

From ChatGPT:
American Elm (Ulmus Americana)

Hey @calgary.ca I can understand why this tree is being removed but any time I see one of these signs none of the boxes are ticked. Last year I saw two beautiful trees in Ogden with these signs and no reason given.
Shouldn’t a reason be given?

This sign is on a tree in Riverbend

Another balsam poplar (populus balsamifera) along with sandbar willow (salix exigua) down in Beaver Dam Flats.

Both are common along riverbanks in North America. I was surprised by the number of poplars right on edge of the river.

I really like looking down from the top of the ridge in Lynnwood and seeing these 3 Balsam Poplar (Populus balsamifera) trees

Pioneer species: One of the first trees to colonize disturbed or open areas
Helps stabilize soil along rivers and prevent erosion

While out for a run in Ogden today I saw this tree, a syringa reticulata (Japanese tree lilac). Another lilac.

While the purple lilacs from an earlier post have shed all their purple flowers/leaves, this one still has all the white flowers and has a nice smell as I ran by.

So many #lilac trees & bushes in Ogden. Here are few, what appear to be, common lilacs (Syringa vulgaris) but with different shades of purple. They all smell nice when walking by them.

Eastern Cottonwoods (Populus deltoides) in #Ogden #Calgary . First pic is from 2025-05. Second pic is the tree next to the first in 2024-06

ChatGPT estimates the 1st tree to be 50-80 years old. Houses in this part of Lynnwood / Ogden were built around 50 years ago.
