Most trees have smooth bark when young. Pictured here, #Burroak has very distinctive, raised ridges on the bark of young #trees. If you are looking to try some winter #tree identification, go outside this weekend and see if you can locate one among the many wonders found throughout our #urbanforest!

Join us on Thursday, 1/29, from 6-7:30 pm on Zoom for ‘Meet the Author’ with Stanley Greenberg. In his book, “Olmsted Trees”, Greenberg photographs historic trees from Frederick Law Olmsted’s parks nationwide, connecting them to the landscape designer’s original visions. tinyurl.com/4xxybbh2

#Mulchfest has begun! You can take your Christmas #tree to be chipped and turned into #mulch for our city’s #greenspaces. Want Christmas tree mulch for your local #streettrees? You can also get that at a chipping site this weekend on Mulchfest. For more info and locations: tinyurl.com/2s4xw7r5

With funding from the #CityParksFoundation #GreenFund, we planted and cared for #trees in Red Hook, Brooklyn - an area prone to flooding. These trees will provide shade and absorb excess stormwater. A BIG thank you for your years of support!

Despite the rain, we were out planting this #tree in the West Village with 8 more set to go in the ground in Red Hook before we close out the year!

Congratulations to our first cohort of Urban Forest Fellows - Julien, Mariya, and Jose! They helped us expand our programming, resulting in thousands of #stewardedtrees, as they trained 16 Young Urban Forester Interns who helped us care for 399 #trees we planted with our #TreesForNYCHA project.

Outdoor learning is turning NYC students into urban environmental champions! Our youth programs have inspired young NY'ers for nearly 20 years, and empowered them to steward hundreds of trees in 2025! Support our mission—every donation helps! 🙌 Thank you! tinyurl.com/mubb84uy

Brooklyn Botanic Garden Community Field Manager and #CitizenPruner Nina Browne has art show – Notice/Know/Kin: A Human/Tree Biography - at BBG’s Conservatory Gallery now thru 3/15/26. Also a woodworker, her art includes many #tree and plant-themed pieces.
Notice/Know/Kin: A Human/Tree Biography - Brooklyn Botanic Garden
This mixed-media art exhibit by Nina Browne, a woodworker turned urban naturalist, invites us inside the artist’s life and inside wood to reflect on our living relationships with trees and the Earth.

A #scarletoak, #Quercuscoccinea, showing how it got its common name in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. Great to see these as #streettrees - thank you @nycgovparks.bsky.social!

What an amazing accomplishment! This fall, we worked with over 20 schools, 2000 students, and cared for 110 #trees with the help of students.

Did you explore the #urbanforest this weekend? If so, you likely noticed that some #trees don’t drop their leaves in the fall but keep most of them on the tree through the winter, like this #swampwhiteoak. This is called marcescence, and why some #tree species do it is unknown!

We are so grateful to our #CitizenPruners and volunteers who help us maintain and expand our #urbanforest. Your hard work are vital to our shared mission and success. Thank you for donating your valuable time to #Trees New York and supporting the work we do together for NYC's urban forest!

We're so grateful to our generous donors and sponsors for funding our work to train #CitizenPruners and volunteers who help us #plant, #steward, and #prune thousands of #trees each year. Thank you for investing in our shared mission to plant, preserve, and protect NYC's #urbanforest!

We are so grateful to our TreesNY educators and the teachers at the schools we work with, who recognize the value of youth environmental education, as well as the students and future environmental leaders who help us steward hundreds of #trees every year. We thank you all so much for your support!

Enjoy the #urbanforest this weekend! #Ginkgotrees (#Ginkgobiloba) are a historic native of NY State although their modern native range stretches across Asia. Found as #streettrees in NYC, they feature a unique #whorledleafing arrangement, and in November, their #leaves are likely already yellow!

#Plantingtrees in the West Village is the perfect way to spend a fall day! Last week, we #planted four #streettrees! We were joined by #CitizenPruners, and they learned how a #streettree gets planted.

Enjoy the #urbanforest this weekend! #GreenAsh is one of the few #trees with compound leaves that you can find in NYC. They have been the recent target of the Emerald Ash Borer, a beetle that creates markings underneath the bark in the larval stage and leaves exit holes as it emerges as an adult.

Our #TreesforNYHCHA project has been a huge success! As we continue putting forth #treestewardship initiatives to maintain this historic investment, we are still prioritizing #wateringtrees to ensure they survive and thrive through ongoing dry weather conditions.

Congratulations to the volunteers who recently joined our cohort of #CitizenPruners, seen here #pruningtrees during their field outing in Brooklyn as part of their training. We are so grateful to them and the 300+ volunteers that signed up this year for the #CitizenPruner course!

Go outside and enjoy the #urbanforest this weekend! The #Sweetgumtree features star-shaped leaves and spiky, gumball-sized fruits. The #tree earned its name from its fragrantly sweet sap that was historically used as chewing gum. Crush a leaf to enjoy its aromatic scent!

Our environmental educators took a quick break from teaching this week to #prune this #streettree that had a limb obstructing a traffic light. #Pruningtrees not only strengthens them but also serves as a way to help make NYC's streets and sidewalks safer for all New Yorkers!
