Nearly a month into a government shutdown, CSEW Director @travisyork.bsky.social's comments about impacts on research and educational institutions are more relevant than ever. If you haven't read his insights in Inside Higher Ed yet, catch up now:
Researchers and Colleges Face Federal Shutdown Impacts

Two weeks into the government shutdown with no resolution in sight, higher ed associations and researchers say the inability of scientists to contact federal agency workers or get new grants approved is causing harm. https://bit.ly/3KNwIVs

Thankful for @insidehighered.com's reporting on how the federal government shutdown is hurting the research ecosystem.

The shutdown is more than a budget pause — it delays new grants and strains institutions & innovation.

We need urgency, not inertia.

Grateful to be featured in the @chronicle.com today. Shutdowns don’t just stall DC—they steal time from science, students, and innovation. #HigherEd must keep showing up for our communities & make STEMM a national priority. 🧪

All people deserve to be included & contribute to the 🧪STEMM enterprise. Data is key to fair systems allowing America to leverage its rich talent, particularly for Queer & Trans scientists. Thank you @freemanjb.bsky.social & @democracynow.org for demanding public transparency & gov accountability!
We’re suing the Census Bureau to force the release of critical LGBTQ+ data.

Failing to release the data = failing to include LGBTQ+ people from policy decisions impacting health care, housing, employment, education, and more resources.

So we're demanding accountability.

The Trump administration knew that the vast majority of the 230+ Venezuelan immigrants it sent to El Salvador in mid-March had not been convicted of crimes in the U.S. before it labeled them as terrorists and deported them, according to Homeland Security data.

The U.S. has led the #STEMM 🧪R&D & Education enterprise for decades thanks to shared values, international collab, & phil+fed funding. In 2022, we founded @stemmopportunity.bsky.social to jointly realize the change required to build a #workforce to power the future of innovation, science, & society.
The STEMM Opportunity Alliance is on Bluesky! SOA is committed to adding 20 million new STEMM workers to the U.S. economy by 2050. SOA's 250+ partners come from many sectors, but the backbone organization is housed right here at AAAS' Center for STEMM Education and Workforce.
SOA has brought people and orgs together to:

⦁ create the U.S.’ first national strategy for STEMM progress and prosperity
⦁ turn strategy into action plans
⦁ get excited to dig into those plans!

How do you collaborate with the #STEM education and workforce community?

1/7🧵Ignoring race, gender & income doesn’t deliver fairness—it deepens inequity. 🚫
Policies that erase demographic data in admissions don’t level the field. They hide barriers and advantage those already holding resources. Check out the evidence below!

We the people have a right to valid and reliable data for public transparency and government accountability. Instead of embracing data to achieve their promises to America, the current administration denies and hides data and then exploits the American people with misinformation.
