Boy, life has been a lot recently.
I think I'll be dropping my current course in university, and sometime next year pick up a different one that I have a passion for (so it'll be easier on my brain to engage in).

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: No lunch meetings. We need alone time to recharge and to handle personal things. Lunch meetings don't just take away from that, they also force us into high-stimulation environments with chewing sounds and food smells. Meetings before/after lunch should be the norm.

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: One-on-one meetings. Catching up with someone in a 1:1 meeting gives focus time to that person's ideas and thoughts without forcing presentation in front of a crowd. Where possible, having a duo session may bring on more and better results.

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: Webcam off in meetings. Many autistic people are hyper-aware of trying to make the right facial expressions and deliver the correct body language at the correct times. Allowing the camera to be off alleviates this and lets us focus on the task, not our projections.

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: Comfortable headsets. A headset that we can tolerate wearing for hours may seem like a small thing, but to us it can be huge. Headsets give us sensory relief from our immediate surroundings and let us focus on our task, but only if we can comfortably wear them.

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: Additional sick days. Many autistic people also have co-occurring conditions that leave them with chronic and/or unexpected pain. When these times appear, we may need the extra time to recover or prepare ourselves, whether it be a few days, or just an hour late.

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: Mental health days. Providing and encouraging taking time away to recover (beyond PTO) is important. Many autistic people are in constant decline just from managing day-to-day activities. Taking an extra day or two here and there can give us the recovery we need.

#ASD #WorkplaceAccommodations: Consistent workspace. Moving our desk or rearranging our workspace can be very alarming. Where reasonable, keeping our space consistent is often a source of comfort, and asking for our input when we do have to rearrange can help find a better path forward.
