Many years ago...Paramahansa Yogananda established the tradition of ushering in the New Year with a special meditation service on December 31. He said that it is always beneficial to use this transition from the old year to the incoming new year to meditate and put one’s mind on God. He would generally begin meditating with the devotees about 11:30 p.m., and would encourage them to think of the past year — not with sadness, but introspecting to see where they need to change their lives so that they might do better in the new year — to think more of how to improve their relationships with God and one another, how to overcome bad habits, and how to develop in the new year a deeper inner attunement with God and Guru. By meditating during this period of change from the old year to the new, and praying earnestly to God that He might bless us, guide us, and be with us and our loved ones and the world throughout the coming year, we welcome the New Year with renewed enthusiasm and refreshed faith in the future. By uniting in spirit with our spiritual family of members and friends around the world, we help each other to strengthen our highest and noblest resolutions for spiritual growth in the new year. As Paramahansaji said: “With the beginning of the New Year, let us with concentrated resolve and spiritual determination enter into a new era of our lives.” ~SRF Center Guide
