It all makes sense once you realize the dems have the same donors/corporate interests as republicans.
Difference is, while in power, only republicans can accomplish the ghoulish, unpopular goals they both want. While dems can only maintain the rightward-moving status quo via "incrementalism".

When a certain party moralizes "Western judeo-christian values" while openly protecting wealthy pedophiles, it is not failing its morals. It is honoring laws/tradition enacted by the god they worship & the prophets they love.
