X hit with $140 million EU fine for breaching content rules, TikTok settles
This is the first sanction under landmark legislation which will likely draw the U.S. government's ire.

If nothing else, the film is worthwhile for the way it depicts, right at the outset, a horrific incident tied to the protagonist’s origins—namely, the Zoot Suit Riots.
I should add that I’ve always had a deep love for films about America’s ethnic-minority communities. They’ve never failed me — and this one, too, is a fine piece of work that I’m genuinely fond of.
In memory of Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.
That The Animals track calls up this scene before anything else.
May he rest easy.

(Setting aside the various matters surrounding this film — the disputes over its depiction, the denied assault, the intra-community feud, and the violence it sparked…)

The last week of November and the start of this month have passed in a quiet, matter-of-fact way.

His portrayal of El Japo in 🎬American Me has always stayed with me. May he rest in peace.

Sir, even in the 2000s, there is still something called 'abandoned citizens' in Japan.

They declared me unfit to live
Said into that great void my soul’d be hurled
They wanted to know why I did what I did
Sir, I guess there’s just a meanness in this world

I actually kind of like Cher’s cover, too.

Reclaim paper, reclaim the analog — reclaim the walk.
Paper books. Paper planners. A backpack.

Don’t let populism overwhelm you!

It doesn’t have the catharsis of Bohemian Rhapsody or the wild swings of Rocketman, but it’s a quiet, penetrating film—one that lingers.
It focuses on the stillness in Springsteen, and I realized that this “quiet” side is, in fact, where his true essence lies.

I watched Deliver Me from Nowhere.
There’s a lot I want to say, but that will have to wait—after I’ve given it the time and revision it deserves.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake, I happened to see my hometown from the train window.
The drainage canal by the tracks—where a candy shop once stood—appeared, then vanished.
Beyond the wide street running perpendicular to the tracks, I caught a glimpse of the apartment block.

Tomorrow, 🎬Deliver Me from Nowhere opens in Japan. I’m looking forward to it.
The Boss—let’s call him the American way—has many songs I love,
especially the darker albums: Nebraska, The River, The Ghost of Tom Joad.
I often find myself seeing my own past, and my family, in those songs.

The day might be near when I’ll have to put on the black hoodie again, grab the megaphone, and take to the streets.
I’m feeling a bit heavy about it.

America’s sliding into a state like Chile under Pinochet.
Here’s hoping it doesn’t leave scars deeper than any civil war.
November 7, 2025 at 4:43 PM
I finally got around to watching last year’s 🎬Civil War.
Sure, there are a few questions about the story, but it felt very much like an A24 film, so I won’t dwell on that here.

I watched 🎬House of Dynamite. Same old Kathryn Bigelow—her trademark pulse still running hot since The Hurt Locker (though Blue Steel doesn’t count). Her films make you feel like your heartbeat’s about to break through your ribs. It’s suffocating, but that’s the thrill.

Even now, at this very moment, I find myself envying America.
There still exists a sense of justice as a moral compass — an honest candidate who embodies it, and decent people who stand with him.

This morning, our city still plunged into darkness, I set off to walk the Brooklyn Bridge toward City Hall in Manhattan. Just like this campaign, when we launched in October over a year ago, I began with only a few people by my side. But the banner we carried told a story that we have always known to be true, even when we were polling at 1%: Our Time Is Now.And as the first signs of light began to emerge over the horizon, more and more people joined us — canvassers, labor leaders, working people and elected officials — until we were a movement, marching toward City Hall. New York deserves a Mayor up late and up early, who works as hard as the people of this city. It deserves a City Hall that’s not only be a beacon of light once the sun has risen and illuminated it from the exterior, but which makes government a light of its own, that people across this city feel at all hours of this day.I cannot do this alone. Election Day looms. More than 735,000 New Yorkers have already voted, and countless more will decide tomorrow what kind of leadership they want to define the next four years.Every voter will consider something different, but ultimately the question before us all is very simple: morning versus night.Do we want it to be morning in New York again, where we feel the warmth of the sun on our skin and the possibility inherent to every new day?Or do we want to shiver in the night cast by a politics of fear and self-enrichment?Our time has come, New York. Our time is now. Polls are open 6am to 9pm on Tuesday, November 4.

I wish I could share a photograph for Halloween,
but such customs have never taken root in me.
So instead, from among the old portraits of the residents of my tiny greenhouse,
I’ve chosen three that seem to breathe a faint hint of Halloween.
