#WIP excerpt | Book 2 of Dawn & Rosie's adventures (after Paper Daffodils)
Dawn sat back, her face alight with wonder. “I can’t believe it, Rose… Africa. God, I’ve always wanted to go.” “And now you will,” Rosie replied, quietly delighted to see her so pleased. Then she schooled her mouth into its customary line of disapproval, lest Dawn mistake her softness for any kind of permission. “Listen, now, though – we’re out there to see the waterfall and have a nice, sensible time, all right? If you sign us up for anything involving safety helmets, dangerous wildlife, or dangling, I’m getting back on the first plane home.” Dawn laughed, entirely unrepentant. “Come on, now, Rose – we’ll be staying at a sensible hotel with sensible guides, sensible spa days, and nothing to do but fawn sensibly over that magnificent wonder of nature. Sounds pretty sensible to me.” “That face of innocence doesn’t work on me, you know.” Rosie’s expression darkened in warning. “I mean it – you’re a bloody magnet for trouble and I’ve no patience left for being roped into it all.” Widening her eyes, Dawn pushed a plate of scrambled eggs at her. “I have no idea what you mean. We’re two sensible women in our sixties on a quiet holiday in Africa – what kind of trouble could we possibly find?” Rosie gave a long-suffering sigh and stabbed at her eggs. “Knowing you… all of it.”

Dawn raised an eyebrow, watching as Rosie crossed to the sideboard and dug a laptop out from beneath a stack of forgotten things. Returning, she plugged it in, settled back beside Dawn, and flipped it open. It booted up fast – not an old machine, really, just unused for a long time. Opening the internet browser, Rosie glanced sideways with a sparkle in her eye. “What are you up to?” Dawn said, suspicious. “Making plans.” Dawn’s eyes narrowed. “What kind of plans?” “I thought you said you liked surprises,” Rosie said blandly. Scooting closer to see the screen better, Dawn scoffed. “I’ve changed my mind.” “See,” Rosie smirked, typing in the search bar. “Told you surprises were no good. Here…” She turned the laptop slightly to afford Dawn a proper view and then sat back with a smug smile. “I was thinking… maybe we should go see that waterfall you talked about?” Dawn went very still, staring at the pictures Rosie had pulled up. “The… one in Africa?” “Yes. That sounds like a proper plan, don’t you think?” For a long moment, Dawn simply stared at her.

The girl clutched the mug Tess pressed into her hands, fingers wrapping around it as if it were the first warmth she’d felt for weeks. Slow and reluctant, colour began to creep back into her cheeks as she sipped, and by degrees, her shivering stopped. Tess sat opposite her, hands folded loosely on the table. Lou could see the question in Tess’s eyes, and the restraint – Tess never pushed first. She waited, offered space, let people arrive in their own time. Lou, on the other hand, didn’t have Tess’s patience for mystery. She slid into the seat next to Tess, and one more beat passed before she couldn’t bear the wait any longer. Clearing her throat, she said, “Well, you look a bit more human, finally… Care to tell us who you are and what you were doing in my back garden?” The girl’s gaze snapped up, startled – and Tess shot Lou a look. Lou grimaced. Tess turned her attention back to their guest and added, much more gently, “It’s all right, love. You’re not in trouble.” The girl swallowed. Her eyes darted toward the back door, as if checking she had an escape route. Then to the windows. Then to the cat, who glared back through eyes like slits. Her hands tightened around the mug.

Lou stared down at those booted feet, heard herself speak before her manners engaged. “You’ve trampled my bloody lettuce.” The girl’s head snapped in Lou’s direction. Her eyes were heavy and dark with exhaustion – the kind of tired that didn’t come from missing sleep but rather from running on adrenaline for too long and suddenly finding none left. Her lips were tinged blue and her hands trembled, though whether from cold or shock it was hard to tell. She blinked, but her attention didn’t land on Lou properly. It dropped, immediately, to something carefully balanced in her open hand. It was a small crystal; clear as ice, threaded with soft strands of blue and gold. It seemed to hold light in a strange way, catching the sun and bending it into faint prismatic edges that flashed across her wet fingers. Lou stared at it, then at the girl’s drenched clothes again, and then at the sky – still a perfect, indifferent blue. There wasn’t a raincloud for miles.
