For the April episode of “Under the Cover,” Artforum Editor in Chief @tinariversryan.bsky.social interviews @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social about how a medievalist became interested in AI, the role of AI in the divestment from public and higher education, and more. www.artforum.com/video/sonja-...

Highly recommend this convo on Artificial Intelligence between two brilliant art historians.

Art History has much to say about how AI sees. @tinariversryan.bsky.social draws out key points from @sonjadrimmer.bsky.social's article "Machine Yearning...". Sonja Drimmer = always insightful and fun.
I really enjoyed being in conversation with @tinariversryan.bsky.social to discuss my article in the April issue of @artforum.com. You can check out the recording of our conversation here!

Humbled to have been able to write on Doré's image of Victorian incarceration and its reverberations (van Gogh, Kubrick, Mangione) for this month's Artforum.

Sarah C. Schaefer argues that today’s viral images of prisoners like Luigi Mangione draw on a 19th-century precedent established by Gustave Doré.

Measles has a 12% mortality rate in unvaccinated young children.

Children cannot be vaccinated until they are at least 12 months old.

And if infants need to be kept home and out of daycare to avoid potentially fatal measles outbreaks...

Guess who that removes from the workforce.

(Women.)
In 3 days, the number of measles cases in a highly unvaccinated area of Texas has doubled. There are now 48 cases, all of whom are unvaccinated, and 13 of whom have been hospitalized so far, for a hospitalization rate of 27%. This is huge figure in epidemiology. This outbreak will keep spreading.

I’m so grateful for progress. Imagine being a peasant in the ancient dark ages who had to work from dawn till dusk just to eke out a bare living while being subjected to the whims of inbred aristocrats and you died of totally preventable illnesses.
