A must-read piece on yesterday’s developments in Georgia. #GeorgiaProtests #StandWithGeorgianPeople #StandWithUkraine #SanctionsNow #makerussiasmallagain
It’s been hard 24h for Georgians. Grave mistakes were made. Yesterday, Georgia lost a battle against Russian takeover - but the fight for freedom &democracy continues. If there’s one thing yst proved, it’s that resistance hasnt disappeared. They tried to bury us. They didn’t know we were seeds. 1/12

Grey zone has become Russia’s comfort zone. RUS active measures against Europe will persist as long as nothing on the ground forces them to reconsider (AS IN, WHEN A REAL PHYSICAL PRICE TAG FINALLY IS ATTACHED TO THEIR BEHAVIOR. Clarifying, since Europe seems to think “cost” is a poetic metaphor).

I sometimes hear that 🇬🇪ns need to “revolt.”

Revolts don’t happen with bare hands, especially in societies that aren't outright starving en masse.

Historically, revolts need elite (whether economic, political, or military) backstage preparation for such a scenario as well as financial support.

JUST IN: the Georgian Dream deprives Georgians abroad of voting rights. If the diaspora wishes to vote, they must physically arrive in Georgia on the election day.

Georgian Dream is banning the purchase of the only non-lethal self-defense tool available, pepper spray. As a woman, pepper spray was the only thing that gave me a sense of security while walking at night.

GD is abolishing both the Personal Data Protection Service and the Anti-Corruption Bureau. The latter, which was originally meant to oversee corruption risks within state institutions, had recently been turned into the main enforcement body of the Russian-style “agents law.”

Insane: according to GD’s new initiative, Georgian citizens living abroad will be banned from participating in Georgian elections. In the rigged 2024 parliamentary elections, GD lost the vote abroad by a large margin to the opposition.

Just in: GD’s Parliament Speaker says Georgians abroad will no longer be allowed to vote.

Over 1 million eligible voters live outside Georgia — most opposition-leaning. GD already suppressed their vote with too few polling stations and hours-long queues. Now they’re banned entirely.

Reading these words is deeply painful. Though the news may appear bleak & worsening by the day, the Georgian spirit remains unbroken. The protests persist & will continue until Georgia is once again on its democratic, pro-European course.

71 y.o. Aza Chilachava is an IDP from occupied Abkhazia. She was detained today for taking part in the #GeorgiaProtests.
She survived a war born of ruzzian aggression and now she’s being persecuted by a regime shaped in that same image. After her arrest, Aza began a hunger strike in protest. 1/5

Only 32 signatures missing to hit the target!

Friends, fellas, let’s go! The UK sanctions are particularly painful for the regime and they cannot even hide it!

Everything about this corrupt, criminal clan feels fabricated and absurd. #GeorgianNightmare #Georgia
Amid the Georgian Dream’s plans to ban pro-Western parties, a political movement affiliated with the GD is establishing a new party called United Neutral Georgia. Its goal is for Georgia to reject the EU and NATO.

Until now, release from prison, even on bail, was always a moment of joy. But Nino Datashvili’s was unbearably painful:
“I can’t even feel joy… I just want to sit. Don’t hug me.. Everything hurts. I’m sorry, and thank you all.” She was tortured for four months. The state can never repay such damage.

Now it’s arithmetic: $0.02 per litre.

While Rustaveli Avenue remains blocked, musician Vakho Babunashvili performs a song from his 90s band, Soft Eject. ❤️

This is the 331st consecutive night that protesters have blocked the avenue — at great personal risk to themselves.

This is Nino Svanidze of opposition party Droa. She’s just served 5 days in jail for peacefully protesting on Rustaveli Ave.

Behind her, my friend holds her tightly, begging her not to step off the sidewalk as it could mean a year in prison.

Day 331 of #GeorgiaProtests.

Friends, today 2 more of our Droa members were detained by the regime, including Giga Lemonjava who served as the leader since Elene Khoshtaria’s jailing.

I’d love to aid my team through your very kind donations.

Please DM me (there’s a new link to share).

Thank you! ❤️🇬🇪🇪🇺

Try to differ today's Georgia from today's Belarus:
1. Opposition terrorised & imprisoned;
2. Human rights threatened, draconian laws and mass imprisonment ongoing;
3. Geopolitical orientation clearly no longer pro-EU;
4. Fair elections under Ivanishvili’s regime are impossible.

Moreover, now schools will only have 11 grades, effectively disengaging Georgia from the Bologna Process.

The Georgian Dream wants MGU and MGIMO to be the only top prospects for Georgians. And maybe some Chinese universities too, I don’t know.
The regime now has further plans to crush universities, such as “one city - one faculty.” In a single city, there should be no two similar faculties. Bear in mind that most universities are in Tbilisi anyway.

This probably means closing down lots of universities.
