This is where BLACK OPS AND BEAVER BOMBING began: on a riverbank near Otterton in the summer of 2020. After filming this clip, I moseyed upstream and nearly walked straight into a beaver that was squatting on its hind legs eating willow.
Along with William Golding's daughter Judy, I'll be talking about Golding and his forty-year friendship with his editor at Faber, Charles Monteith, at this online event on 12 November at 7pm. Nicola Presley asks the questions. It should be fun. www.faber.co.uk/product/will...

Fly agaric. Hallucinogenic but very volatile and unpredictable in its effects. We left these for any shamans that happened to be passing.

This is forthcoming in early November. The project accompanied me through cancer, chemo and Covid, so I'm a little emotional that it's finally making its bow. What an honour to edit William Golding, who has been 'my author' since I first read The Spire as a teenager.
William Golding: The Faber Letters reveals the remarkable literary collaboration between a Nobel Prizewinning novelist and his editor of more than forty years.

Edited by Tim Kendall, out in November 2025 and available to pre-order now. www.faber.co.uk/product/9780...

7am this morning in the drizzle at Axmouth Harbour. All season I've been looking for adders on heathland with no luck. Then I stumble across this beauty while I'm just out walking the dog.

Still no swifts but we spotted the first swallow of the year in Colyton this morning. That's about a fortnight later than usual.

For generations of readers brought up on the #poetry of 1914-1918, it may come as a surprise to discover that the Second World War produced any poetry at all.

A very fair article on beaver bombing from a surprising source. None of this would need to happen if successive governments weren't so pusillanimous. (P.S. Why not gift a copy of BLACK OPS AND BEAVER BOMBING for Christmas? It's a banger.) www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/12...
