Fifteenth-century house from North Cray, Kent, at the Weald & Downland Museum. Its elm timbers were originally painted red. Mounting evidence shows medieval timbers were often painted with natural hematite-even this finely carved wainscot post made for Henry VII had a similarly painted red ground.

Lucky to combine a meeting @westdeancollege with a tour of Salvador Dali’s Mae West Lips Sofa, his celebrated Lobster telephone and the dancer Tilly Losch’s ‘wet’ footprints in the carpet. All part of Edward James’ fabulous collection.
