Lately, I’ve been reading a number of thoughtful editorials that reframe the purpose of research, including why we publish & who we publish for.

Susan Ashford’s (2013) paper was a particularly enjoyable & insightful one for me that highlights the importance of balancing timely vs. timeless topics
Having Scholarly Impact: The Art of Hitting Academic Home Runs | Academy of Management Learning & Education
With more and more academics feeling more and more pressure to produce numbers of publications, I articulate the value of papers that are perhaps fewer in number, but have more impact on the subsequen...

Sadly, I had to evacuate my home this week but am deeply grateful for friends, family, and first responders for looking out.

Nonetheless, the LA fires serve as a poignant reminder of the devastating man-made consequences that can arise from systemic issues and destructive feedback loops.

Cannot stop thinking about how Octavia Butler wrote a book in 1993 about climate change. It opens with deadly fires in LA in 2025. In the story, a fascist President has just won office with the campaign slogan "Make America Great Again."

She was a modern day Nostradamus. If only we'd listened.

Emerging work highlights how #AI data center expansions raise #energy demand, strain grids, & degrade power quality.

But given entrenched spatial inequities, it's worth examining the decision-making & stratification of energy costs, safety risks, & grid reliability for low income/SES communities.
AI data centers are multiplying across the U.S. and sucking up huge amounts of power.

New evidence shows they may also be distorting the normal flow of electricity for millions of Americans
AI Needs So Much Power, It’s Making Yours Worse
There’s a strong link between proximity to AI data centers and higher levels of distorted power in residential areas

OpenAI can serve as a fascinating #mgmtsky case for hybrid organizing.

It’ll be interesting to follow:

1) how it may maintain dual-mission alignment while responding to competitive market pressures in a fast-moving sector

2) the implications of its governance for broader hybrid decision-making

Can’t help but think about the parallels to #entrepreneurship and #innovation.

Pre-academia, I’ve worked with lower-SES founders, and barriers like needing to support family or lacking relevant networks limit not only who participates but also the kinds of ideas that gain traction and recognition.
Academics from poorer socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to
- not publish
- have outstanding publication records
- introduce more novel scientific concepts
- less likely to receive recognition, as measured by citations, Nobel Prize nominations, and awards.
