An interesting account by Terry Fallis of the journey a new novel takes from writing to publishing. The actual writing takes only three months. Editing takes twice as long. And it's over two years from writing to publishing. terryfallis.substack.com/p/update-on-...

In all seriousness: the last 2 weeks of TikTok posturing and Zuck grovelling, combined with the X insanity of the last year, should show you that an app with a feed that you don’t control serves *other people’s interests* - not yours.

"Ultimately, whatever it looks like, a need and desire for new, fact-based information is still out there. The challenge now is to work out which of the old models for delivering it still work—and at what scale—and which need reimagining."

The delta in Daily Active Users (DAC) on Bluesky vs Threads is much lower than I thought it was. If the current trend is maintained, Daily Active Users on Bluesky should surpass Threads some time in December.
👀
Similarweb: Bluesky app usage in the US and UK grew ~300% to 3.5M DAUs after Nov. 5; Threads now has 1.5x Bluesky's DAUs in the US, down from 5x before Nov. 5 (Financial Times)

“We’re in an era of fractured social media now, where communities gather in different spaces for different purposes … Bluesky, no matter how popular it gets, will be only one part of a much larger ecosystem that includes X, Threads, group chats and more.”

Putting the "social" back in social media. Bluesky is a platform for connecting with real people in a real way. Different from other platforms that are algorithm driven with For You feeds that entertain. Social is different and better than Parasocial.

I truly am loving Bluesky. A return to an algorithm-free chronological feed of the thoughts published by people I want to follow. A place where it is again possible to develop relationships with others connected in communities of interest. Simple language: a friendly place for friendship.

Just my 2 cents. But my goal is to ignore the trolls. Give them zero attention. Block them if they annoy me.

I think the worst thing we can do on this site is re-create the ad hominem/ personal attacks that occur across comments on Twitter/insta/tiktok/ etc
