Morgen viert Zuid-Korea het tachtigjarig jubileum van de Japanse overgave en de herwonnen onafhankelijkheid. Een half jaar voor die bevrijding stierf de jonge dichter Yun Dong-ju in een Japanse gevangenis. Zijn poëzie klinkt nu sterker dan ooit.

While visiting Enoshima, I found a memorial to Nie Er, composer of China’s anthem who drowned nearby in 1935. His death sparked an unlikely connection between Fujisawa and Kunming—a small, local story that cuts through decades of political distance.

Seeing Koreans go out to protect their democracy and manage to safeguard it from a very real crisis is awe-inspiring. At the same time it also makes me lose a little bit of hope for Japan, where this level of political awareness and activism seems almost unimaginable…
