Please take time to check in on your housed neighbours as well. Seniors with mobility issues in particular. They may not have been able to get out for essentials over the past week…

No system is perfect, in nature or as a social construct. But that’s why ideals are so important: they give us something to strive for, to work toward, to better ourselves in service of. Democracy, as an ideal, as imperfect as it is, is still worth every ounce of energy we can expend fighting for.
January 26, 2026 at 12:32 AM
If you take this view of the current political playing field, it’s in no way β€œdemocratic” as ideally defined. And perhaps that’s the saddest thing of all: the sullying of an ideal that could raise the tide of prosperity and lift all boats with it, instead of the mega yachts of a few.

The amount of $$$ being fed into the political system to influence policy outcomes is astonishing. And that money isn’t coming from the average person. It’s coming from those who sit at the center of the extractive capitalist economy, either directly or via legislated grey areas such as super PACs.
January 26, 2026 at 12:32 AM
As a Canadian looking in from outside, I see the horrors of the current flavour of capitalism unfold in so many dehumanizing ways. Even in my own country. In particular, the view of people as resources to be exploited to feed a never ending cycle of profits.
January 26, 2026 at 12:32 AM
All of the negatives he describe can arise in all forms of government. But I think that the current, singular, focus on the actions of an extension of the government obscures a deeper issue in society today: the unfettered influence of extractive capitalism and corporate power in government.

One of his central arguments is that genuine freedom is multifaceted, government must be structured to protect (not crush) that freedom, and fascism restricts freedom by exploiting emotional manipulation and terror to subvert the intelligent and dominate the masses.
January 26, 2026 at 12:32 AM
Ultimately, Russell calls for a political system that respects and nurtures all forms of freedom: political, intellectual, artistic, AND economic, while remaining vigilant against the seductive tactics of demagogues. This does not exclude capitalism.

These tools are used to keep the populace obedient, thereby undermining rational discourse. He also emphasizes that a society that cultivates independent thought, scientific inquiry, and moral reflection is the strongest bulwark against the rise of authoritarianism.

I my last post re: the rise of fascism, I offered an expansion of the oft quoted Bertrand Russell. I’d like to broaden that discussion as I think some of his views on the role of government may have been lost. He emphasizes that fascist movements rely on β€œemotional excitement” and β€œterrorism” …

The process itself can be reduced to this:
1: a charismatic leader gathers a cadre of violent, idle men;
2: those men manipulate the masses appealing to emotion and using terror to silence critical thought.
How eerily familiar is this given the events playing out right now?

The idea that fascism’s progress starts with the ability to β€œfascinate fools and muzzle the intelligent” is often quoted. The wrapper to this passage by Bertrand Russell, from his 1940 essay β€œFreedom and Government” is even more prescient in today’s political climate: …
