Every season drops a new group of guests into paradise with a mysterious death at the center, and then slowly reveals how awful, fragile, and ridiculous they all are (while also revealing WHO died and how). What makes this such a great follow-up to “Palm Royale” is how much both shows care about social power. Who belongs? Who doesn’t? Who’s pretending? Who’s embarrassing themselves without realizing it? The big difference here is tone because “The White Lotus” is darker and sharper, and it’s always circling something uncomfortable. But if your favorite “Palm Royale” moments were the ones where everyone’s smiling while carrying out psychological warfare, this is the next stop. The difference is what they do with it. “Palm Royale” leans into camp and social warfare. “Schitt’s Creek” slowly turns into one of the warmest, most generous comedies on TV. It’s about realizing you don’t actually need to be inside the fanciest room to feel like you matter. If you loved the big personalities and the style of “Palm Royale” but want something that eventually feels like a hug, this is an easy follow-up. What makes this such a nice companion to “Palm Royale” is that same contrast between fantasy and reality. The resort is stunning. The vibes are immaculate. But behind the scenes, everyone’s hustling, scheming, and trying to survive. It’s lighter and more earnest than “Palm Royale,” but if you loved seeing what’s underneath the glamour, this one fits perfectly. Acapulco October 8, 2021 In 1984, Maximo Gallardo’s dream comes true when he gets the job of a lifetime at Acapulco’s hottest resort, Las Colinas. But he soon realizes that working there will be far more complicated than he ever imagined. Wild card: ‘The Resort ’ Okay, this one’s not a straight comedy, but it still belongs here. “The Resort ” takes place at a vacation destination and uses that setting as a pressure cooker for something stranger and darker. It follows a married couple on an anniversary trip who get pulled into an old disappearance tied to the resort, and the mystery slowly takes over their lives. What it shares with “Palm Royale” is the same idea of a beautiful escape hiding something underneath. Everyone’s supposed to be relaxing. No one actually is. The difference is that this show leans more into mystery and emotional weight instead of camp. It’s slower and weirder, but if you like your glossy settings with a side of existential dread, it’s a great curveball pick. What follows is a long, tense trial that pulls apart every aspect of their marriage. The courtroom scenes highlight how different French trials are. There are no objections or grandstanding speeches, and the defendant can be questioned at any time. The film puts viewers in the same position as the jurors, sifting through conflicting forensic testimony and personal grievances without ever showing the fall itself. Triet doesn’t give easy answers. The ending is deliberately ambiguous, and that’s what makes it linger. It won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and went on to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. Clark introduces Floyd to a local hookup app called DTF St. Louis, pitched as a way to add excitement without consequences. That promise is, obviously, a lie. What follows is a story about desire, jealousy, and middle-age regret. Who stars in ‘DTF St. Louis’? Jason Bateman, David Harbour, and Linda Cardellini are the clear center of the show. Bateman plays the charming but deeply avoidant Clark. Harbour plays Floyd, who’s sweet and earnest but not exactly equipped to handle what he’s getting pulled into. Cardellini plays Carol, a woman who’s spent years holding her life together for everyone else and is finally tempted to want something for herself, even if it blows everything up. The supporting cast is stacked too. Richard Jenkins and Joy Sunday play an odd-couple detective duo investigating the death at the center of the story. According to Conrad, the cast was chosen specifically for emotional range, not just jokes, which makes sense given how uncomfortable this material can get. Who created ‘DTF St. Louis’? The series comes from Steven Conrad, who writes, directs, and showruns the project. If you’ve seen “Patriot ” or “Perpetual Grace LTD ,” you already know the vibe. Conrad loves flawed people, long silences, uncomfortable humor, and watching characters dig themselves deeper while insisting everything is fine. Bateman and Harbour are both executive producers, along with producers from Aggregate Films and Escape Artists. The show started life years ago as a different project called “My Dentist’s Murder Trial,” but this version is fully original and much more character-driven. Will ‘DTF St. Louis’ have multiple seasons? Officially, this is a limited series, and HBO Max has been very clear about that. It’s a seven-episode story with a beginning, a middle, and a real ending, and it doesn’t feel designed to stretch beyond that. Steven Conrad tends to tell closed-loop stories, and everything about this setup points to a one-and-done limited series.
