A right triangle has sides (a, b, c) where c is the hypotenuse. Scale up three copies by respectively a, b and c to get similar triangles with sides:
(a|2, ab, ac) (ab, b|2, bc) (ac, bc, c|2)
then the first two fit exactly inside the third, sides a|2 and b|2 fitting exactly into c|2. QED

Just read "Hidden Harmonies" by Robert & Ellen Kaplan, a history of Pythagoras' theorem woven into a kind of humanist hymn in praise of number theory and geometry, a great read. I learned two new (to me) proofs of Pythagoras, one of them stunningly simple, see next post.
