A little painting of boxes on a box.. that i forgot to take a picture of as a box. It is really satisfying to hold.

This week I'll be posting pages from my sketchbooks! I finished about five this year, and I was drawing pretty constantly. I love drawing people from life and trying to capture their personalities :)

Today I'm sharing some wall paintings I made last year while a TA for a mural painting class! I painted all the students while they worked on their final project. Materials: house paint and a black posca marker

I wanted to try the weaving idea again, but this time with separate strips of canvas. Instead of doing a simple in and out basket weave, I translated the first few lines of the national anthem into morse code, and weaved that pattern in. it got a bit wrecked in storage unfortunately

I have another roller painting for y'all today! This time the figure is more buried, as I did a few layers on this one. I really like the asymmetry and general composition of this piece. I was thinking about color symbolism and how the support (canvas) is a part of the meaning of the art.

This was another attempt at using a roller to make a painting-- this time combining abstract and figurative elements. I again worked on unstretched canvas, as I liked the visceral quality of the raw edge and hanging material. It turned out a bit overworked imo

Some more abstractions-- I was experimenting with different ways of mark making, so I used a roller and paint scraper for these.
What do you see?

Next up in experimenting with figures-- I decided to try to emphasize the integration between figure and ground. I've always loved outlining things, and these paintings were a challenge to that. I basically tried to apply the brushwork from the flower paintings to people. They became very emotive!

After making those roller abstract painting I played with making a portrait with just a roller. It was a fun experiment!

Something a little different today-- a collection of small abstract works I made with an ink roller. I had never really done abstract painting and made it my mission to try everything I said I couldn't do before!

Another mourning painting, but this time I wanted to complicate it more. I wanted to implicate the neutrality of white, as a color and as a symbol of "good."

I forgot to measure this one...

Another mourning painting of a flower. This time I wanted to exaggerate the dimensions because there is something very body-like about a long vertical canvas.

Another still life-- I wanted these flowers to hold all my grief and horror, and while they couldn't do that, painting it did help me process some of those feelings. Free Palestine.

Another painting on metal, this time copper. I absolutely adore this painting! The material really requires sure brushstrokes, and I gained so much confidence making it.
