You simply can’t fix a US STEM pipeline issue without investing in K-12 schools and STEM. The US relies on foreign born talent to fill critical workforce needs because we don’t have the STEM pipeline. STEM jobs often require graduate training and experience. You can’t just put anyone in those jobs.

“In 2021, 57% of master’s degrees awarded to temporary visa holders were in S&E fields, compared with 19% for U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Among doctoral degree recipients, the vast majority (83%) of temporary visa holders earned degrees in S&E fields, compared with 59% of U.S. citizens.”

My dissertation research on international students pursing master’s degrees in the US seems timely given all the discussion on H1-B visas.

Just submitted the final copy of my dissertation to the UNCW Grad School. The reality of it has not sunk in. Who knew a smart ass, scrappy kid and sexual abuse survivor from Reading, PA would one day defy the odds to earn two master’s (one from Harvard) and then earn a doctorate in education?

I learned since coming forward that my abuser sexually harassed at least one other student (and after she decided to enter the convent). I doubt I was the first or last, unfortunately.

Current mood about my dissertation defense on Monday….

Instead of cutting recess or PE in K-12 schools, maybe this is an opportunity to institute WWE smack downs!
