I am an urban farmer, plant dork, food loving leftist. My profile will likely be filled with pictures and posts about my cats, dogs, and chickens, food I grow and make, and the challenges and opportunities of living in our late-stage capitalist hellscape.
(Part 7) This is a direct consequence of the power the “food” industry has over our us. It intentionally creates the illusion of food price crises so that we buy the junk that keeps us trapped and powerless to demand a better future. Our national sickness is our subservience to those killing us.

(Part 6) That providing yourself with the food staples you need to set yourself up for success is unattainable so we collectively relegate ourselves to shit food just to get through the day. I say all this with a massive amount of privilege (cis-het, able-bodied, white male).

(Part 5) For the same cost of his “breakfast” for one day he could have bought items providing him with 6 days worth of nutrient dense breakfasts, given his week a much better chance at success. This country is physically sick because we instill a belief in the people that success is for the wealthy

(Part 4) Cost comparison time: pasture raised eggs, whole grain bread, bunch of organic bananas. For the sake of comparison I chose highest costing options and looked at national averages: $8.50/do, $5/loaf, $4/bunch. Added together and multiplied by TN sales tax (9.75%) comes to roughly $19.21.

(Part 3) Total cost was just under $20. $20 for one “meal”, arguably the most important one of the day, the meal that sets up the rest of your day for failure or success. In this case, I’d lean towards the former. Nobody has a productive day and maintains internal homeostasis on that kind of junk.

(Part 2) His “breakfast” was two bags of Flamin’ Hot Funyuns, a bag of artificially fruit-flavored Lifesavers gummies, and a Hershey’s chocolate bar. For the sake of brevity gonna set aside all the arguments about how the production of those products is dripping with intentionally designed inequity.

(Part 1) Had to get some sunscreen this morning because lort knows this pasty skin of mine can’t take the sunlight, so I stopped off at an unnamed store this morning. Gentleman in front of me had an armful of junk for “breakfast”.

15lbs of carrots from 40 row feet in the backyard. Not bad for heirloom carrots, especially since so many washed out in the intense rains earlier this spring. Climate change is going to make food production that much harder. Coupled with increasing supply chain issues and inflation… #growathome

Even the macaws are coming out against fascism. Pretty sure it screeched, “Fuck Trump” right in my ear. #noking

Hot chocolate with a shitload of peanut butter in it has the flavor and texture of melted Reese’s Cups. Only the finest chocolate in my Chocolat Chaud x JIFF. @tonyschocolonely.bsky.social

I gotta stop being so good at stuff. Y’all are gonna start getting embarrassed. Quick pizza dough, kale and garlic scape pesto, char siu guanciale, fontina, Japanese BBQ sauce. Kale and scapes from the backyard, local pork belly. #backyardfarm #pizzastone

(Pt.3) ….this woman is incredibly intelligent. She noticed Carlos eating Johnson grass in the backyard. Grass is a natural emetic for dogs, but in this case it wound up poisoning him. Keeping track of his symptoms, she narrowed it down. It went right by me, the plant guy, the farmer.

(Pt.2) Johnson grass has compounds in it that are precursors to cyanide, that when they are digested by the mammal gut creates hydrogen cyanide. By keeping even a little contained in the backyard until removal, my beloved Carlos has cyanide poisoning. Thankfully he’ll pull through because….

(Pt.1) Johnson grass, Sorghum halepense, native to the Mediterranean region of Europe, Africa, & Asia Minor. I’m sure it’s lovely there in its native range, probably plays a vital ecological role. It’s wildly invasive here in the US. I have a little growing in my backyard but keeping it contained.

More from the backyard farm. The only one of three vines to have survived the years. This will be 11, maybe its most productive one yet. Rain barrels diverted a lot of the water, mulch soaked up more, with the resulting moisture control improving the vine’s growing conditions. #backyardvineyard

From the cat to the compost, peppers, garlic, carrots, tomatoes, mixed onions, collards, carrots, tomatoes, shallots, kale. All in about 300sqft. #urbangarden #backyardfarmer #allnatural

A new ant colony forming amongst the blanketflower. I love ants. They mine the ground and create resilient homes, aerating my soil. They decompose organic matter, adding nutrients back into the earth so my flowers continue to grow taller than me, a sign of a healthy ecosystem. #urbangarden

I’m not typically a raised bed fan but this one made out of locally sourced, native hardwood 2x6s will likely stand the time and I’m happy with the way it turned out. Only four more to go. Happy to share the process with whoever wants to learn. #urbanfarm #communitygarden
