Crucifixion was a public form of execution used in order to strike fear into the public and prevent people from rising up against Rome. It was used as a form of public humiliation and torture. Crucifixions on non-Roman citizens were done without any kind of due process for the “criminals” accused.

All that you need to maintain authoritarian control is fear. Maintaining egalitarian freedom and democracy requires all your basic needs be met—like economic stability, safety, shelter, food, and healthcare. It’s no wonder democracies fall into fascism during time of crisis. But love casts out fear.

People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative.

A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same.

With Easter right around the corner I thought it was a good time to talk about the complex relationship we have to violence. Is violence ever okay?

Gosh. If only there were an historical analogue we could study to learn about the horrors of rounding people up without due process and sending them to torture camps in other countries.

I’m convinced that there isn’t any response quite as evil as saying to a suffering person “Everything happens for a reason“ or “It’s all in God’s plan.”

Especially when their suffering is being caused by a reality that you voted for.
