Final Fantasy, Yu-Gi-Oh, Persona, Digimon and many other series use a similar mechanic.

Love how people just want drama, and reposted this in mass, without knowing shot about the topic, Nintendo and Pokémon have a LOT of problems, but we dont need to also make stuff up about how patents work just to put even more shit on them. They couldn't copyright a common idea, even if they wanted
