Do you have staff teaching phonics for the first time? I’ve written a free blogpost about the common challenges that hinder success and how they can be addressed by making a good start.

Beautifully put by Simon Jenkins @theguardian.com:

"The essence of #oracy is helping pupils articulate their thoughts to others, to listen and reply with courtesy and intelligence."

Another way we are failing an entire generation: we must teach young people to speak | Simon Jenkins
The PM promised to prioritise oracy lessons, but has failed to do so. Set against tests and exams, it is seen as a luxury: in fact it is essential, says Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

Are you aware of Dr Fry’s word lists? They’ve been around for a while, however, we could use them in a more innovative way to build automaticity.Take a look at my latest article below and access over 450 free phrases to use in class. Inspired by @timrasinski.bsky.social

After hearing David Almond talk, I had to read another of his books. Skellig it is. It’s well-known but not one I’ve read.
Nine chapters in and so far, so good.

Children's books are not a luxury. Libraries & librarians are not a luxury. The teachers who work so hard to inspire kids to read are not a luxury. If you cut or undermine or lose these things – #literacy will cease to be a basic human right, and will become a luxury, available only to a few.

My new book, Primary Reading Simplified, is released this Monday.

Briefly, I'd like to explain why it exists, who I think will find it useful and where you can find it.

Tonight’s NAAE roundtable discussion enabled me to hear from colleagues across the country. Thoughts-Continue to support teachers to create content for the young people. Schemes have their place but generating the best sequences of learning builds confidence, improves outcomes and enriches learning.

Early adopters of my spelling programme are seeing excellent results already- Imagine the impact when a child has it from Y2 to Y6.
It builds staff confidence and gives them everything they need to create excellent spelling lessons. #spelling #teachspelling

Many practitioners come to me for support with pupils with SEND and their learning to read journey. Hopefully, you’ll find some useful guidance in there, particularly if you’re faced with the same challenge. #phonics #SEND
